When you connect onsite, you are probably using something like:
mail.yourorg.com for Outlook http://mail.yourorg.com/exchange for Outlook Web Access Using a VPN connection, you may need to use: www.xxx.yyy.zzz for Outlook (where www.xxx.yyy.zzz is the IP address if the Exchange Server computer) http://www.xxx.yyy.zzz/exchange for Outlook Web Access |

is there a way to access without using OWA? can I access from Outlook itself... I am on clearwire and cannot access http on my server. I can access owa from offsite if I vpn in and put in the local IP of the server/exchange, but I would like to be able to use Outlook itself. shouldn't it be able to access via port 25?( i had clearwire unblock that port)

Outlook should work using a VPN also. What error message are you getting when you try to send or receive e-mail?

Are you using the IP address instead of the mail server name to access the server? If so, can you ping the IP address? On my Exchange Server, when using Outlook from inside the local network, I select Exchange Server as the Account Type. This should work using a VPN as well. However, if it does not, you can also select POP3 as the account type and use the IP address. I have done this with a non-Outlook mail client and it works also. You do need to make sure that you have the Exchange Server POP3 capability enabled for this to work.

I will try that. What you described is exactly how I am set up here.

There is another way but I wouldn't try it on a slow connection.
"Exchange Server 2003 SP1 and later provides support for access over the Internet without the need for a virtual private network (VPN) (remote procedure call [RPC] over Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure Sockets Layer [RPC/HTTPS])." I have tried it and it does work. OWA is easier in my opinion. |
