Do you want to conect to a VPN, or make your own? What do you want to use it for?

Using the built in windows XP VPN server will only allow 1 authenticated user at a time, otherwise you'll have to buy a license for RAS (remote access server).

THIS (http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm) will help you get things going from the server side. Make sure on the router firewall settings you let IPSec, L2, and PPTP passthrough and that your forward the proper ports (1723, 500, 51, and 50).

From the windows 98 side of things, THIS (http://www.mcgill.ca/ics/tools/vpn/win98/) will get you going.

Good luck and remember that this is a free way to do this and is not guaranteed to be very reliable. You would need to buy a VPN server (preferably from Cisco) to create reliable connections.

Also... if you want a simplified solution that isn't usually accepted by corporations but sounds like may be usable in your environment... Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc) is a much easier solution, but I don't think it is supported with windows 98.

Wow an AS/400 been a long time since I saw one still in service. I guess they are still floating around but most of my clients have moved on.

I'm such an idiot... I don't know where Windows XP came from... I haven't touched an AS/400 in 8 years... maybe... Sorry if my advice was misleading... I don't know how to help you from the server side.
