Wireless Router ????

I just got a new Toshiba laptop a couple of weeks ago. We go camping each month and sometimes we are out for a few weeks. I want to get a router so I can access the internet whenever I want to. Can someone suggest a good one?

I can get one through Toshiba....a Netgear 802.11g Cable/DSL Wireless router - for $19.99 formerly 59.99. Would this work??

if you are camping, you will not be able to access your router with your laptop unless you are camping in your backyard.

Does the campsite provide internet service or how do you plan to get internet to your router?

Did you know that 90% of all laptop repairs can be avoided by regular cleaning? Just take a can of compressed air and clean the ventilation areas, fans, etc. Your computer will run cooler with fewer problems.

Renegade, we are not "roughing it"...we are in an RV. Some campsites have WiFi, so I assume I will not have trouble here, but some do not. But I was told that with the router I could access a satellite ?? Don't laugh, I'm new at this. If I am outside a city maybe 5 miles is there a router that would work that far? How about some of these new internet services that say you can access the internet anywhere with them ?

no ones laughing, just trying to figure out what you are trying to do. you really do not have a need for a router if the campground offers wifi. It would be just like staying in a hotel with wifi, just bring your own wifi laptop and you have the internet.

But what if I am at a campground that does not have Wifi ??Isn't there one that will pick up a satellite or something. And also, exactly what are the routers for.

if you are in a campground without wifi, then you will not get internet access uness you have your own satellite dish or use your cell phone - if you have cell phone access.

Renegade is right... I'll elaborate a little bit.

If campground has wifi, then your computer needs wifi capability. Most laptops have this built in, but you should check. If it does not, then there are USB dongles that will do the wifi.

If the campground does not have wifi, then the next best will be if your cellphone will work as a modem. That's a question for your cellphone company, and be sure to discuss coverage, charges and any additional cables you might need.

Satellite is expensive and slow... really slow and expensive if you want to do it while your vehicle is moving. Otherwise just slow and expensive. I'm not even sure where to start you on that.... search the internet for 'satellite internet'.

Happy Camping!

Ah, I need to pick up on a few of your other questions, sorry...
A router primarily allows multiple computers to share a single internet connection. A wireless router allows a computer with wireless capability to connect to it. The campground will hopefully have a wireless router in a building somewhere. Range of wifi depends on many things, but on the order of 100's of feet, rather than miles.

My laptop does have the wifi built in. We bought a new razer cellphone, but the internet was SLOW..costs like $9.00 + on Cingular a month. We dropped it. Guess I'll just stick with wifi for now. I guess you know you can find a listing for each city and state and place of business that has it.

signing off for tonight...be back tomorrow.
