For about a week now I've been being disconnected at random from the internet...when it happens the send and receive lights on my modem go out, everything else stays on though. As far as I know theres no problem with the actual service, and I've scanned for viruses and spyware several times and gotten rid of anything that showed up. I'm using charter high speed cable...could it be a problem with the modem and should I get a new one, or does anyone know what else it could be?

Need some more info to work with here.
What OS are you using?
Do you use a router and share the internet connection with another computer(s)?
Do you have other services with your ISP that share the cable like T.V. and/or phone service?
If you have T.V. service as well with Charter do you use a splitter on the cable to watch T.V. on your computer?
I've scanned for viruses and spyware several times and gotten rid of anything that showed up
What was your computer infected with?

I'm using Windows Xp (service pack 1 if it matters), No router, we get cable tv from them but I haven't noticed any problems with it, and no splitter...I already deleted the viruses I had so I'm not sure what they were exactly, but my anti-virus listed them as trojan downloaders if that helps.

I would follow this link and post a HiJackThis log in the Cyber Safety forum to make sure you got rid of all the baddies.

Wait until your advised by a HiJackThis helper before installing SP2. Installing SP2 on a infected system can cause problems.

If the send and receive lights on the modem go out but its power light stays on, I'd suspect a problem with the modem.
If the power light on the modem also goes out, I'd suspect a problem with the electric socket it's plugged into or the plug that goes into the back of the modem or the wire itself. Possibly a power drop that's so slight the lights don't flicker but enough for the modem to react.
