New/Old Computer - Try Linux?

Hey I just got a computer from a yard sale and I thought I would reformat the hard drive and install Linux so I could learn how to use it. The computer has Windows ME on it and it's not functioning too well. Driver problems. It boots up and runs but then I can't do anything. My dad gave me an old copy of Linux Fedora but I'm open to suggestions. Any help of wisdom would be appreciated.
Thanks, Scott

The current contenders seem to be Suse and Ubuntu. I prefer Ubuntu, in fact, it's all I use on my home computer.

It really does help to fill in your computer information when you register. Just click on 'My Control Panel' and edit your profile. Thanks!

Did you know that 90% of all laptop repairs can be avoided by regular cleaning? Just take a can of compressed air and clean the ventilation areas, fans, etc. Your computer will run cooler with fewer problems.

What are the specs of the machine? If it was running Windows ME, I wouldn't expect it to be too much of a beast. Ubuntu is nice, but for a lower-end machine, you might try Xubuntu. Essentially, Xubuntu is an Ubuntu system loaded with xfce4, a lightweight window manager.

It has an AMD Athlon processor 996 Mhz with 256 Mg of RAM.
I think it is a home built system.

Well, Xubuntu should run quite well on that machine. During the installation, you can partition your drive with built-in tools. The only step you would need to take in order to reformat the drive is download the Xubuntu install disk, and start the installer. :P

Thought I would follow up on my original post. I downloaded the software to Xubuntu and installed it on the computer. I don't have it connected to the internet yet but I'm getting there. It was fairly painless except for a few short comings on my own computer knowledge. So far it's pretty cool. I thought I would download some software and install it and go from there. Thanks for your help.
