accessing cd drive across a lan

Hi I'm new to networking so sorry if this is a stupid question, I have a dlink dl 624 router with 2 pcs wired to it, 1 xp home and 1 win98, the cd drive on the 98 computer is acting up so I've been using virtual drives, is there any way to access the virtual drive on the 98 machine to tell it to mount a different image from the xp machine

That depends on the software. With daemon tools the operating system isn't able to share it, with Alcohol 120, a service called StarWind (or something to that effect) allows the drives to be shared.

Have you got the virtual drive running on the 98 machine? If you have and you just want to access the images from the xp machine you could just keep the images in a shared folder on the network.

Sorry I guess I havn't explained the situation well enough, the virtual drive is on the 98 box the images have alraedy been put onto the 98 box via filesharing, the problem is the images are for a game and the game wants to switch images from disc 1 to disc 2 but will not let me out to the desk top to do it so I was wondering if I could unmount and mount the images in the virtual drive on the 98 box from the xp box?

No. There is no API/RPC that would support that kind of thing.

Use the windows key or the ctrl-esc sequence to access the start menu and you should be able to get to the control program for the virtual drives.
