USB Thumb Drive & Windows 98SE

Hi,

I have Windows 98SE on a notebook computer. The USB Thumb drive needs a driver and Windows 98SE does not have driver for it. I checked advice on another tech board that said "contact the maker of the drive and download a driver from their site." I don't know who makes the thumb drive I have.
How do identify hardware mfr's in 98SE? XP has a Run command that ID's all the Mfr's of your hardware, but I forgot the commad and am not sure the command works in 98SE.

Thanks,
Al

Plug it in to the XP machine.
Right click the my computer icon.
Click the hardware tab.
Click device manager.
Look for it in the listings.
It should list what it is.

Hi

You could try downloading and running Everest.

It should tell you the make and model of your drive.

Cheers

Can't find Mfr website to obtan USB Drivers

Thanks for the advice guys, I found the maker of the USB drive using Leroys advice. Now, I can't find Mfr's website using Google, the drive is made by a company called "Standard Disk Drives" and model# is: HTS424040M9AT00. It is also possible that even I find their website, they may have No USB driver for Windows 98SE.

What now?

Thanks,
Al

Hi

According to the site that is a 40gb hard drive.

Are you sure you've given the right info?

Cheers

Hi Beanie,

It's 32MB, I guess 40MB is probably unformatted. What site are you reffering to ?

thanks,
Al

Hi

From the part number you gave in an earlier post this is the drive it shows. A 40gb hard drive and NOT a USB thumb/pen drive like in your description.

Cheers

Sorry, I made a mistake, the model # of the USB Drive is the "Betasub Flash Disk" made by Standard Disk Drives. Now, where can I find a driver for it?

thanks,
Al

Hi

I really think you're barking up the wrong tree here.

Please can you download Everest from my previous post and check the make and model of the drive under the USB devices heading.

Cheers

Beanie

The Everest program output for the USB Thunb-flash drive says:

Field Value
Hardware ID USB\VID_0204&PID_6025&REV_0100, USB\VID_0204&PID_6025

Will I be able to find a driver for it by typing that ID into the Google search window?

Thanks,
Al

Thanks,
Al

Hi

Sorry my mistake. With the stick plugged in please take a look under the heading STORAGE and DISK DRIVE. The stick should be showing like mine is circled in red here.

Cheers

Beanie

Edit: I have found a possible driver which can be downloaded from midway down this page but let's see if we can find the correct one for you first.

Hi Beanie,

I was unable to view your link because the text was too small and blurred, but I did check the 'Storage" report it only says: "A: Removable disk" no other info.
Another area of the report shows the yellow question mark near the USB drive.

As per the Centron website (maker of your Flash drive)..

A question that keeps coming up is something like the following....
"I inserted my DataStick [or SpinDrive, or USB MP3 Player] into my USB port on my computer with Windows ME / Windows 2000 / Windows XP. Windows asks for a driver. How do I get the driver?"
The drivers for the USB Mass Storage devices like the DataStick, SpinDrive and the USB MP3 Player are already built-in to Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. No additional driver is needed.

For Windows 2000, it is recommended that you update to Service Pack 4.
For Windows XP, it is recommended that you update to at least Service Pack 1, if not Service Pack 2.

A driver is only needed for Windows 98. Those drivers are posted on the Centon Drivers page.
[Note: Windows 95 drivers are no longer supported.]

Again, the driver for the DataStick is already built-in to Windows ME, as well as Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Some computers may not fully install USB Hardware List drivers. To fix this you will have to extract the usb.inf file from the .cab files on the Windows CD. For additional assistance with this, please contact your computer manufacturer.
