cd rom reads win 98 cd but not any other

i got a laptop that hung on cursor,i tried booting from different disks but the only one it recognized was a original windows 98 cd,i tried booting from win xp copy cd it does not see it at all same with win 2000 and win 2000 pro so i installed win 98 and figured i will upgrade it once im in the desktop but when i try to open any other cd it does not even see that it is in the drive but once i put the win 98 cd it opens and reads it without a problem i never came across this kind of problem before is their anybody that has any advice that thay can give me about a similiar problem that they came across thank you in advance.

Have you tries using the original cd's or are these some you downloaded just to see if they could be read??

these disks are working, used in my other computers many times over its not just the windows cds but all other working data cds it just reads the cd that the computer was fdisked,partioned,formatted and installed from its weird but true

You still didn't answr my question.. Why haven't you tried the originals rather than the burnt ones??

Also, does the system read other cd's (game, etc) that are original and not burnt??
