Well I just started using command prompt a bit and find it interesting to use and was having difficulty using the net send function. At school, since the computers are networked u can send messages between computers and I've tried to do it at home. I've set up the network with 2 computers, connected via a router, with cables not wireless, i ran the network wizard on both comps and am sure of the two computers' names.

My sister's computer i have just named LUCY and whenever i type the command "net send LUCY hello" or something like that i get the message "the message alias could not be found on the network". But when i type "net view" it brings up both my computer (RICHARD) and my sister's (LUCY). It says in one column server and the other remark, do the two computers need to have the same server for this to work or something? and if so how do i change it because at the moment the server for my sister's is //LUCY and mine is //RICHARD. but i am sure they are both on the same network (HOME). Any help would be appreciated.

What ver of Windows do both computers use? By default the Windows Messenger Service is off with XP SP2. You would need to turn the Messenger Service on for both computers, however this will open you up for potential security holes. The Net Send command and Windows Messenger Service were outdated at best and can allow persons to send pop-up type spam and other security related issues can be exploited with the service running. If you still want to use it we can help but if you want to be able to send messages with very little overhead why not try the third part app like Kinberlink HERE (http://www.download.com/Kinberlink/3000-2085_4-10197519.html) It's free, easy to use, has a small footprint, and not a security risk. You will need to tune Windows firewall if you run it but thats as easy as adding an exception.
