Wireless Connections?

I recently inherited a laptop with a Linksys Wireless-G Adapter already attached. I am currently using a Belkin 2.4 Ghz 802.11g Wireless router to which I have 3 other computer connected via "hardwire". How do I make a wireless connection between this laptop and this router? This laptop has been working in a wireless connection to a DSL setup. I have Cable broadband.

Right click on the little wireless symbol on the bottom right a click view available wireless networks. Then choose your linksys router and click connect.

If you want to secure the network log into the router config page by typing 192.168.1.1 into internet explorer on any of the connected pc's. Then choose the wireless tab, click on security and enable WEP or WPA security and assign a key. You will then need this key for the laptop to connect to the router (only the first time you connect) so write it down and enter it when you try to connect to the router on the laptop.

Wireless Connections

G_Dem, When I right click on the icon down in the sys tray I get 3 options:
(1) Disable Windows XP wireless configuration
(2) Open the monitor
(3) Turn monitor off
I clicked on (2) and got a window which said, in part:
"No association with access point" and "Adapter is inactive"/
What's this "access point"? I assumed that the adapter communicated directly with the router. Is there a "middle man", so to speak?

Wireless Connections

G_Dem, I have another bit of information which may be of help to you in determining my wireless connection problem. There is an icon on the screen identified as "Wireless Access". When I right click on it I get a drop down window. One of the choices is "Run AS". When I click on it I get another window which reads, as follows:
"Which user account do you want to use to run this program?" Then it shows the Current user (which is the original owner of this comouter) with a bullet in front of it. Then there is a 2nd choice with blanks for both the User Name and Password. When I enter my user name and password and click OK it says: "Unable to log on: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password." How do I get my name registered so that it will be accepted?

What happens if you go to network connections in the control panel and right click the wireless adapter there? Do you get the option to view available wireless networks?

suggestion...

if you have a linksys card, look for the WLAN on the system tray, right click that and choose allow windows to manage this connection.

assuming you are using win xp sp2, lets enable the service first... heres how to do it..

go to start > run > type services.msc click ok scroll down, and look for wireless zero configuration. double click and make sure that the service type is automatic and that the service status is started, if not, click start, make sure that the status should say "started"

once started, on win xp sp2, go to network connection under control pannel, right click the wireless network connection icon and go to properties, look for network connection tab, make sure theres a check on "use windows to configure my wireless network" and erase/delete all entry on preferred network box. click on view available networks, assuming you know your ssid, click on your ssid if it shows up on the available network screen, and click connect. it will ask you the WEP or WPA key. enter the network pw, and click ok.

for win xp sp1. on network connections tab, click on the right ssid, click configure, uncheck the box that says "the key is provided for me automatically" and it will now allow you to enter the network key. click ok and ok.

if you are connected to the access point, you will have a 192. or a 172 ip address, if not, check all configuration settings again. let me know if this helps...
