What do i do with this old computer

Its a Time comp about 6 years old,

- 600Mhz Processor
- 256 pc100 Ram
- 25Gb HD (not sure on speed)
- Intergrated Graphics + Sound
- 350 Watts power supply

Basically the only thing worthy in there is the psu

Use it as a door stop or give it to the local youth club.

I agree. Either that or the fishtank suggestion. :D

Anyone looking to buy a fairly large paper weight? Only £9,99!:D it also doubles up as a cabinet for storing stuff

Edit: I got linux on my main comp but i was thinking of using it as a muck-around-if-i-mess-up-it-doesnt-really-matter comp

Got two old ones in our loft, they both died of natural causes ie mobo I think. Theyre not too old, I fancy doing the Linux thing or downgrading to Windows 95 or 98se to see if I remember what to do :D

Sandcastle mould Fill an old PC case with sand, turf it out onto the beach, and watch the queues form.

Busk
Glue keyboard to old broom handle, attach old belt to whole assembly, download electronic organ program and start busking on the Underground using keyboard strapped to body like Stratocaster as a cross between a guitar and a synthesiser keyboard. If you can pull this off with attitude, swagger and possibly even a tune or two, you'll be snapped up as the next big thing by a gimmick-hungry music industry in no time

Or my favourite

Stress relief device
Buy a baseball bat. Place bat and PC behind large glass screen. When your current PC gives you the kind of gyp we know and love so well, smash glass screen, take bat and extract revenge for its sins on its father. Therapeutic, cheap and possibly patentable.

This is a good idea:D

Some of the 25 Uses for an old PC require the old PC to be pretty advanced, such as: 'Games platform', 'Recording studio' and 'Video editing suite'. This idea is good 'Make money! Well, not a lot probably, but it might be worth auctioning the whole shebang on eBay, for example. Be sure to completely scrub the hard disk first.' but im not sure anyone would want to buy this computer :P

Back ON TOPIC...
If it's network capable, set it up on-line as a distributed computing client - e.g. SETI@home etc.

Frankly that's a better system than 4 of the 7 PCs currently running in my house.
A 500 Mhz CPU is all you need for a Kids PC for internet browsing and homework. Any faster and it'll only get used for playing games. Keep it slow and no modern games will run on it. :)

25GB Hard drive - can use it as a backup file server.
Could be used as a dedicated game server for some older games.

keep it, you can use it as a firewall, learn linux with, use to test problems, backup, download your porn on :rotflmao:

The strongest (serious) suggestion here is to insatll linux on it and just mess around with it. I thinki can connect it to my current network quite easily so this seti@home thing could also be done. Another problem is that it is only the computer, no cables, monitor, speakers, etc (all being used with another computer). I could unplug one comp and plug this in for messing around though. My dad used to play wolfenstein 3D on it and thats one of the only games i found that worked :D

Thanks for advice i will consider keeping it now. Also would a 350Watts psu worth anything to be sold on its own or is that out of date and not wanted now a days?

Edit: maybe this thread should be moved to the Open Discussion as its not really a technical problem just an idea thread

Hello

Your computer could be used as a learning tool, diagramming and removing all the hardware and wires, then putting it back together, powering it up and working, can be a satisfaction in life. A 6yr.old PSU is a bit outdated , keep it as spare.

You could always turn it into a hitech hamster cage
