I have been having a real problem with trying to connect to any external FTP server. I have no problem making a LAN connection, but whenever I try to connect to an external FTP server, it pauses saying connecting, then it says "connection failed (connection timed out)". I've tried a few different FTP servers, as well as a few different FTP programs all with no luck. I've tried shutting off my anti-virus software as well as shutting off Windows firewall and still no luck.

Your ISP might be blocking the port used for FTP communication on its network. Is this someone elses FTP server? also, your firewall or router might be blocking the necessary port for communication. Are you using a software firewall?

I'm trying to connect with an FTP program to this website to download stuff. I've done it many times before with the same site, untill recently is doesn't work for me. Other people ive talked to have no problem with the site, and I'm not doing anything wrong to not allow me to connect like wrong password. So the problem is with my computer settings. The firewall I'm using is the MS Windows one on XP, but even with it shut off I can't get connected.

I have a dialup modem, and the firewall I'm using is the MS Windows one. But like I said, nothing changes when the MS Windows firewall is shut off.
