I'm trying to reformat my harddrives, reinstall windows 98, and eventually set up an FTP server (although I'll probably switch to Linux for that).

I followed this guide but when I'm at C:\>format c: /s I get an error about media not readable or something abort retry fail?

What's up?

Thx

PS. Any word on how to set up an FTP? Filezilla is the software I'd like to use.

Hi Chris,
I either found a typo in your post, or I found the problem. You said:

C:\>format c: s/

If you meant that, then you have the slash wrong. It is:

C:\>format c: /s

Yes, actually, it seems to me like you cannot format the active hard drive from windows. At any rate, you should be able to boot from the 98 CD, choose setup, and somewhere along the way you should get the option to format.

It's been so long since I messed with 98... I thought there was a way in the install to delete existing partitions, but maybe not. Ok, download a bootdisk file with DOS, boot on that, and run fdisk to nuke all the partitions, then load 98...
