View Full Version : Small business network trouble!

This is probably a really easy configuration problem with the IP settings in small business server or something but I hope someone can help. I work at a local doctors surgery and was asked by the boss to upgrade the LAN and WAN with a new router modem that had wireless (being the only one in the office with an computer knowledge).

BEFORE:
The network consists of 4 computers, 2 run on small business server and 2 on windows XP. Originally, the network was running off a D-Link 4 port router modem, with a LAN cable running from the D-link to a 8port hub (don't ask why as only the 2 computers running small business server were plugged into it). Anyway the original network was configured, I'm assuming, using small business server (I have only worked on home networks using XP or lower). The gateway the network is using is 192.168.0.1.

AFTER:
My boss asked me to change the D-Link router modem to one with wireless capabilities (I got a DSL-G604T) as he was sick of the cables running everywhere. I unplugged everything, changed the router modem over to the new wireless one, installed wireless cards in all the computers that would need a wireless connection (3 of them) and run the software, and plugged everthing in.

PROBLEM:
All went well, except the problem is, when I try and run the DSL-604Ts set-up wizard I can't access the 10.1.1.1 in the browser to do so, on any of the computers. I figure that if the network was originally configured in small business server on a gateway of 192.168.0.1 then i need to change the routers gateway to access the D-Link set-up wizard on each computer? Is this correct? And how do I go about it as I have no knowledge of small business server? Finally, will I have to perform any other steps?

So you have the modem/router in place and have one pc wired to it just for the reason of setting up the connection? If not I would have at least one PC wired to the modem/router for no other reason than doing a config on a router is much more stable, and secure with a wired connection. Some routers won't even allow you to do a config via a wireless connection. So with one PC plugged into the modem/router by a lenth of cat5 I'd go to Start/Run in the run box type cmd and hit enter. This will bring up a black DOS looking box. At the flashing promt type ipconfig /all what you want to note is the gateway ip address. Now launch a broswer and type in http://thegateway ip here for example if the gateway is 192.168.0.1 then you would open the browser and in the address bar type http://192.168.0.1 and hit enter. This should get you into the modem/routers setup area where you can set it up for your internet connection type, dhcp, and wireless options. Since this is a business you will want to be sure and setup WEP or WPA so that no people within range of the modem/router get into the network.

do you have the IP statically assigned to those computers, if so, please set them all to dynamic.

you can also try to hardwire the connection first, to setup your new router, once all the configuration has been saved, then try manupulating the wireless connection settings and enter all necessary information to setup your new network.

The network gateway in ipconfig /all is 192.168.0.1. When I enter that into the web browser, a microsoft small business server page comes up (not the d-link router config page). I will enable WPA and change SSID's when I get access to the routers configuration page, but at the moment I can, on either 10.1.1.1 (nothing) or 192.168.0.1 (small business server page). Do I have to run a connection wizard or change setting in small business server?

Everything is dynamic as far as I'm aware...

Yeh I ran into a problem, the wireless network cannot see the SBS server. I kept 2 of the computers wired (server and the other closest computer to the hub/modem) and made the other 2 wireless. The WAN/internet works fine all all computers, however I'm getting a problem accessing the server computer. Below is the ipconfig /all logs of each computer:

Does the small business server act as your gateway?

Here is the old network and the wireless network im trying to achieve

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e123/R3linquish3d/originalnetwork.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e123/R3linquish3d/network.jpg

The wireless network I've secure with unique SSIDs, MAC filtering and WPA passkeys.
I think I'm having the problem with where the cables are spose to go, because the guy who did it originally made a mess of things. The 2 wired PCs should be connected to the 8 port HUB, which in turn is the only thing connected to the 4 port wireless router, which in turn is connected to the phone line, right?

Then leave the servers ipconfig the same? or change it to DHCP? The server had WINS proxy of 192.168.0.1 enabled do i really need that?

I think I may have found the problem. At very least, I found a problem.

If you look at the network information for your clients, you are using 2 different DHCP servers.
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.254

This is a bad thing. You need to disable the DHCP server on your SBS2003. As for changing the server itself to DHCP, its better for servers if they have a static address. Also, please do disable the WINS server on the SBS2003. Unless you have a large network WINS is just overhead.

Once the above is done, restart all the computers and see if the problem is resolved.

Also, find out what 192.168.0.55 is. It is being distributed as the gateway from the SBS2003 DHCP.

Well after disabling the primary WINS and ensuring the host server was operating on a static IP I stopped it handling as a DHCP server. I changing the routers DHCP range from 192.168.0.1-200 and kept gateway and DNS the same. I deleted WINS on saluddin workstation and after shutting down and restarting the workstation I MANAGE TO GET THE SERVER NETWORK AND INET WORKING! YAY!

I also changed NetBIOS over tcpip to default after it was set to disabled. I dont know if that did anything but as a result of your advice and help it has done the trick. I think the main problem was there was the server DHCP conflicting with the routers DHCP, so now the router handles DHCP, DNS and gateway.

Once again thank you so much for your help I'm very grateful and I even learnt some server networking in the process!

Haha I knew this was too good to last. I'm sorry for being a pest but I have run into a few problems:

1. Saluddin's PC (wirelessly connected) keeps changing to:

saluddin - Running XP Pro
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : saluddin
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
DNS suffix search list. . . . . . : surguery.local

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.21
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.55
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.254
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Primary WINS. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.55
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, 5 September 2006 5:16:40 PM

I have set everything to static, including the default gateway of 192.168.0.1. But I cant firgure out where Saluddins PC is getting this primary WINS and new gateway of 192.168.0.55 from on the server. The problem occurs every few days, and not nessecarily when I reboot. I have disabled everything I can think of on Saluddins and the server.

2. Other 2 clients (DRGHANI and workstation3) keep dropping inet and server connections every few days. I even assigned static IPs to all the clients on the server to see if it was the routers DHCP. No luck. ipconfig /all shows all clients with gateway and DNS of 192.168.0.1, and I can ping the server from these computers. I need to disable the connection and renable to repair it.

I just want to know if maybe I should change the gateway and DNS 192.168.0.55 on the router and all machines (since saluddin keeps getting this from the server), keep static IPs on all clients, disable DHCP on router?

Any suggestion would greatly help, sorry for the trouble.:curse:
