HV Frequency Over Range

Does anyone know what this message means? It suddenly popped up on one of my user's monitors briefly, then the monitor went completely black. Is this a monitor, video card or software issue? The user has a 600 mhz PC running W2k. Monitor is a ViewSonic 90f purchased June, 2002. Video card is by STB Systems Inc. with an S3 Trio32 chip.

Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure the resolution and refresh rate are within in the monitors capabilities.

Did this error occur in normal operation or were they doing something graphically intensive, or perhaps running software that changed resolutions ?

Thank you to everyone for your responses. Please bear with me as I am a new user here and not a tekkie. I plan to download the latest adapter. In answer to one response, the user was not running anything graphically intensive -- just trying to delete some text from a Word document, then the monitor went dark and briefly displayed this error message.

Sorry if what I said sounded like that. It was not written with the intention you obviously percieved :) Keeping conversations on the forums helps other people who maybe experiencing a problem similar to yours find a fix for it. I saw you were a new user so was just trying to let you know :)

I am playing a game and this happens to me. Some one said that it could be your hard drive. But he hasnt talked to me since and if anyone knows what it is please let me know. Also my computer will go in to Power Saving when im playing a game. So both of those happen when im playing a game (counter-strike cz and source.)
