Problem with firewells

Hey guys, Ive been having this problem for a while. Its my Internet, it refuses all incoming connections; wether its hosting games or sharing files.

Home network:
Windows XP. One desktop on ethernet connection connected directly to router (netgear, model: Wgr614 v5) which is connected directly to modem (2wire). One Laptop connected wirelessly to router.

I tried disabling every firewall i could think of. Windows firewall, uninstalled norton, uninstalled mcafee, disabled modem firewall, tried port-forwarding router. I might have done that wrong though...made a static IP for both comps, desktop Ip is: 192.168.1.2 and laptop is 192.168.1.3. Port forwarded through my router with port 26883 which matches my torrent application. Also tried the ones from Blizzard for Starcraft, still having problems connecting to Battle.net. Things i CAN do are share files through aim, join hosted games, use programs like skype.

The hints for posting thread said i should include some other stuff so....
IP: 192.168.1.2 or .3
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

The applications i wanted to run are like..Age of Empires 2 (I can join but not host a game) and uTorrent (no incomming connections). Im at a complete lost, can anyone help?

Thanks

For diagnostic purposes, you could bypass the router and direct connect to the modem, it would help you narrow down the problem. Have you been to PortForward.com? They do a good rundown of the ports for various games and programs. And, you might tactfully ask your isp if they are filtering anything. Many are now blocking common torrent ports because their customers are using up so much bandwidth.

You are on the right track though... you have some stuff working, so it's down to fine tuning. Good Job.

Did you know that 90% of all laptop repairs can be avoided by regular cleaning? Just take a can of compressed air and clean the ventilation areas, fans, etc. Your computer will run cooler with fewer problems.

Welcome

Also ask your ISP if they block ports. They may only allow you the standard ports for http, ftp, smtp etc.

Hey guys, thanks for the help. I connected my modem directly to the desktop, and uTorrent went through. But when I reconnected the router, the port was blocked again. I use uTorrent's port tester to check.

Ive actually been to portforwarding.com before, and when that didnt work I came looking for help here =). The site tells me to make static Ips for both comps, and then edit the router's settings, which i did.

Stats:
Desktop static ip: 192.168.1.2
uTorrent's port: 26883 (uTorrent allows u to change ports)

what I added to my router's port fowarding option:
application: Utor1
Start/End port: 26883
Server IP: 192.168.1.2

Ive configured my modem to allow port 26883 into the desktop and that worked fine without the router. But im stuck again. Any more helpful tips?

You caught the bit about choosing TCP/UTP under Server Type?

I got nothing then... We figured out that it is being held up in your router so I guess my only advice is to go back to portforward.com, and go through the procedure again carefully. Well, you could update your router software... long shot. You would need to go to the Netgear site for directions.

How did you configure your modem to allow this? Is it possible that your modem view your router as a different device so it not allowing the port through to the router, just the PC when its dirrectly connected. [just kind of thinking aloud here ]

Also, try scanning port 26883 with an online scanner like this one. It should show it open if the firewalls are set up correctly. If it doesn't show up open, then I'd check the logs on the router to see if it shows up being blocked.

This happens alot with hosting games. I don't even think it is port forwarding. You just need to make an allowence/exception for the specific game or program in your router. To do that on my router i needed to set up a virtual server. If you possibly have a virtual server option on your firewall just look up some info about how to set it up. (probably on a support page for the program you are trying to use).
