internet but no file sharing

Hello all! I just added a "new" computer to my wireless network and it sees the other computers' files and can download them but can't upload - message is always "file may be in use" and/or "check for write-protected" Neither is true, of course. Internet is working fine - I'm using it now. I have shared the folders right down the line, but still no transfers. I didn't have this problem when adding my laptop. Ideas?

Sorry for posting incomplete info. I did look for similar posts but had trouble figuring out what key words to use - "file-sharing" gave me a wide variety of results, most of the time regarding complete lack of connectivity.

Anyway. The new computer is running Win2k and the others are XP. I can't remember what to do with ipconfig, though I remembered how to run it; it's not being much help to me now as it is showing the lan connection only, which is not connected - maybe that is the problem? I have a D-Link DI-624 wireless g router on a 3mbps dsl connection. AVG is running on the other computers, but after reading your recs. here I have just put Antivir on this new one. The computer with the dsl is a PIII 1ghz and my other is a P4-2.4ghz. My laptop works fine on the network but is currently not connected.

Thanks for all the info. Since you have internet access, you basic network setup is most likely fine and since you can read file on the share your basic file sharing setup (like being in the same workgroup) is most likely fine.

Can the XP machines write files to the other machines' shares?
When you shared the folder did you set it up to allow write permission?

For folders that you want to upload to, you'll have to make sure that "Everyone" has write access to the folders shared. To do this, right click on the folder and goto properties. On the sercurity tab, you can check user access.

Thanks to both. I have selected and shared the relevant folders on my XP machines and can move files between them (though they are hard-wired, I should mention - only my laptop previously used the wireless). When I go to add the win2k pIII-866 I can see it in the add network places folders dialogue but when I click on it to expand to see the drives the "+" just disappears and the "Okay" button greys out. And yes, all are in the same workgroup.

Just noticed your 1st ipconfig should the default gateway as 192.168.0.1, which I assumed was the router. Your 2nd ipconfig output shows a manually set IP of 192.168.0.1... This doesn't make sense. Which machine isn't working, is it the one for the 2nd ipconfig output?

yes, I'm using ics. The first ipconfig I posted is for the pIII-866 which is the machine with the transfer problem - won't write to other computers and is only "sortof" seen by them as I mentioned above. The second log is the main computer with the modem - it has an internal dsl which then outputs through a nic to the router. The router uses a crosswire cable to communicate with the other P4 xp computer and is wireless to my laptop and to the pIII-866 through the Netgear usb.

Are you using the DI-624 purely was an access point then?

I'm not sure of your definition of access point. The dsl services the PIII 1ghz first before the nic reroutes the signal to the wireless router. The router currently does successfully share files between the p4, PIII 1ghz and the laptop, as well as internet. It's only partially working for the new PIII 866mhz, sending files to it, but unable to take them off.

Why don't you have the DSL connected directly to the router?
