Can anybody recommend a good video codec package (free would be good)

I downloaded an avi file, and the sound plays fine, but I don't get any video. I've already figured out that I probably need the video codec, but the file properties list it as unknown. I'm assuming thier are some downloadable codec packages that work with a number of files so I don't have to download a new individual codec for every file? Can anybody tell me where to find and download something like that. If it's relevant I'm running Windows 2000 Professional 5.0. Thanks.

all codecs packs i know they are all free, one of the best it k-lite codec pack i forget the latest version, but i have 2.64
