I wonder if anybody can help me
I have an 18 month old laptop which has hardly been used and has only been connected to the net once, as it’s a spare pc (tax fiddle!!) about 9 months ago, when my desk top went in for some work. As a precaution back then I installed Norton internet security 2004.
I now need to use the lap top connected to the net but Norton is causing some problems
My ISP techies have confirmed that I should be able to connect (as we have done it in safe mode) but Norton is stopping it from happening normally, how ever when I go into Norton it is switched off and will not allow me to switch it on (still asks me to connect to net for updates tho!) it says I need adminastrater settings to access this but I am the only one that uses the laptop and I will not let me log on to get admin settings.
I have tried deleting it by going to control panel, add/remove programmes but all that happens is a window saying supervisor access is required to uninstall, but as I have said Norton will not let me switch on or log in
I have read some where that some times Norton likes to have the disk in the pc when trying to uninstall so I tried that but that didn’t work either
I have even tried to use system restore to take it back to before Norton was installed but that didn’t work
Anybody got any ideas

You are not going to get very far without administrative rights....

If it's version 2003, 2004, 2005 or 2006, try the Norton Removal Tool (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039).

Hi again Beowulf,
I was keeping an eye on this thread to see if it would go anywhere, but I wasn't expecting a lot of other input. You have to have administrative rights to get out of this. You could download the removal tool on another PC, but I'd bet $5 that you have to have administrative rights to run the removal tool. Maybe you left the administrator's password blank. Try logging in as administrator and a blank password.
If that doesn't work, then you are probably on your way to a Windows reload, which is just as well if you can't get administrative rights. Not having these rights will hobble you at every turn.

As Roadrunner said, download the tool with the PC you're using to post here, burn it to CD, take the CD to the computer with the problem, copy the file to the harddrive and see if it'll let you run it.
Have you tried booting into the main, usually hidden, Administrator account? You can run anything from that account.
If you're running XP Home, that account is accessible only in Safe Mode.
If you're running XP Pro, press Ctrl/Alt/Del at the welcome screen to get the Administrator logon prompt.

hi i know how you can fix that i think........ if you go into control panel then users there is an option that says change the way users log in....... click this. it will then bring up an option to turn off fast switching and the welcome screen... untick the fast switching option and click apply...... after this restart your computer... once you've done this when it loads up it will ask you to log in...... you then want to change your user name to administrator, don't enter in a password just press enter and that will allow you to log in as an administrator.... hope this helps

right then..downloaded and burned NRT..........sucessfully removed Norton from the laptop..........immediatly downloaded AVG to have some form of antivirus protection (and it works ok on the desk top), and 5 mins later i picked up 5 trojans that AVG recognise but can not heal or quarentine! doh!!
any body suggest good free antivirus software or trojan remover?
thanks for all the help guys
