Smile Dell Inspiron 4100

I now have a used Dell Inspiron 4100 and I know nothing about laptops, it does not have a manual either.

I have lots of ?? so please be patient with me.

Is this a laptop or notebook????? Whats the difference?

Can I use my nortons virus disk on this laptop or can I only use it on one computer as its on my desktop?

How long does the battery have to charge and how log does the battery last after charging? How will I know the battery is through charging?

Can I plug in a printer and scanner to it and just leave it all hooked up like my desktop?

Thanks!

THANKS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH
i will read all of the info. I really thank you so much!

I saw where it has a place to plug in speakers??? Does it not have built in speakers?????

Thanks again, Would you know how to get a manual? I talked to someone on line at Dell and they said it is no longer available. I found that odd.

Thanks

Question

Do any of you know how to tell how old a dell battery is? I have had my dell laptop plugged in for hours and when I unplugged it and tried to cut it on (nothing) I took out battery and pushed the little button and nothing lit up to tell me how much power was in it. This is a 2002 dell. I have no way to ask previous owner right now.

I do charge it with computer turned off is that correct?

my dell is this one

Thanks!

Nothing. They are the same thing. Though, there are several different sizes of portable computers, and some people have a tendency to call the smaller ones "notebooks", but there's no set size to call it one or the other, and it's not a standard thing.

Unless the license specifies otherwise, you can only use Norton Antivirus (or most other commercial software) on one computer.

This should be mentioned in the manual, but if not, it'll probably have a battery life of about 3 hours (official answer) and will charge in about 2 hours (official answer). You will know the battery is being charged if the green battery light is on - likewise, if the light is off, it's not being charged (the battery is full).

Assuming your laptop has the necessary connections to have both plugged in, and its operating system is compatible with the printer/scanner drivers, yes.

Some batteries do not have that function, even though they have the LED lights on them (I've got two, neither of them do). As long as it doesn't explode, it's alright.

O>K> confusion again lol lol then how do I know if this battery is good??? I e-mailed the person who gave me the laptop to find out, hopefully he is not out of town still.

On the battery on the front panel there is a dot and to the side of that there are 5 little markings and when I press the dot it kinda goes in and the markings do not light up. That means the battery is completely gone correct?????

Could the charger be bad it came with 2 of them? Should I switch to the other and try it?
Hang in there with me please!

If the laptop is able to run off the battery for a good hour or so (preferably the 2-3 hours they're meant to last), the battery is still good. Windows should tell you the remaining battery time in the taskbar (next to the clock, hover over the battery icon), which is based on the rate of discharge it measures at the time, so you don't need to wait around. Actually doing stuff on your laptop uses more charge than if it's just idling, so don't be surprised if it starts off at 3 hours remaining, then jumps down to maybe half that when you start eg. playing games.

If, when flat, the battery won't recharge; or if the battery lasts less than about an hour (rough guide), then you may have a problem (either the battery or the AC adapter). Do note that laptop batteries naturally lose their potential charge as they get older, and will need to be replaced every few (2-4) of years.

"The battery has not worked in a while keep the computer plugged in or you will have to buy a new battery"

o.k if the battery is no longer good then why keep it pluged in? I need a new one regardless lol am I not understanding the concept of a battery.

The battery won't charge at all so I need a new one.
