Sorry i should of given a better description the first time. Windows detected a registry/configuration error it said to start mode so I do: then error, HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable xms memory at the address it has 8 numbers . then says xms driver not installed. then all i can do is press enter to safe mode so i did and said HIMEM.SYS is missing make sure file is in directory, how can u do that if it does not boot? But before it said that it is missing it did a check and said it found windows xms driver version 3.95 and extended memory specifications (xms) v.3.0.

Any idea's ??
thanks Austin

Hi austinator...those are classic symptoms of RAM gone bad. You could try removing the stick(s) and cleaning the contacts with something like a rubber eraser, then reseating them securely.

Himem.sys will not load if it detects bad memory, and the subsequent error messages are a result of himem.sys not loading.

When removing the RAM stick(s), make sure the power is off at the wall socket and take anti-static precautions. If you're not comfortable with hardware, I'd advise taking the computer to a repair shop.

Hi Austin, I have again merged your new topic to make it a reply to this one.
Please use the http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/images/reply.gif button to confine your replies to this thread so we don't lose track of what has happened so far in attempting to solve your problem.

Can you tell us when this appears on your screen and exactly what you did before hand (did you replace the memory?)

It sounds like it is BIOS configuration screen, I think some older IBM machines (like Compaqs) will automatically access this setup area when a hardware change is made.

Does the PC now boot into Windows or can you not get past this screen?

the screen showed this a drive and hard disk right after the started the machine we had found that one of the ram sticks was bad and it gave us a progress of how much was bad and when we found witch stick was bad and booted without it the first thing to come up is the black screen with the disk and the drive with two arrows pointing down on f1 and two pionting up at the drive. It will not boot untill i get past that screen.

well u guys are great thanks for all your help.

Hi Austinator, sorry we appear to have forgotten you... :(

What happens if you press F1?

That would be IBM's way of telling you to go to Setup because something is wrong there and their suggestion is that it's your disk setup parameters - you may have changed something and your BIOS isn't set up for AUTO, or the battery's dead and all settings went to Default and need to be reset, or something similar, but it won't go any further until you look into Setup (F1).

Did you try selecting F1 when you see the arrows pointing at it? It's been a very long time since I've worked with IBM's, but there is a way to get into the setup mode to fix the problem. Also you can try pressing-and-releasing F1 while the computer is starting, because if you hold it down, the computer will get a stream of codes for F1 and the buffer will overflow, causing the beep.
