Hi everyone, I am new here and have a problem on Windows ME that just started after purchasing DSL. Now that I am connected to the internet, my computer hangs, the mouse still moves and I can occasionally surf the net(or run an program thaqt does not require "folders" to open) but no windows will open. When I use the task manager to see what is not responding it occasionally lists explorer (not IE - I am running Mozilla) and when I end task things are fixed until I try to open a folder. If I unplug the internet connection and restart, all is fine. When the computer hangs (with it connected to the net), even if it does not say explorer is not responding, if I force it to end task, all is well until I try to open another folder. So I either have a computer but no internet, or I can surf for limited amounts of time, but can do nothing else on the computer. I have run the scan disk, defrag, repaired IE, cleaned spybot and norton. All problems encountered were removed or fixed, but my main problem remains. I used to have a dial up connection, is there something I need to fix in the internet connection? I hook other computers (running XP) up to the same connectin and everything is fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Hi confused_me, this may be an problem more suited to the Networking Forum but it wouldnt hurt to check your startups first and make sure that it is not a malware issue.

Lets see what is running on this PC. Go here (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/getfile.php?id=99) and download the latest version of Hijack This. When you have downloaded it, doubleclick to install. Once installed, open Hijack This and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Also go here (http://www.silentrunners.org/) and download Silent Runners.vbs (clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose "Save Link As" to a new folder on your drive and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (it will be in the new folder you created). Please post the information back in this thread. If your antivirus program queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.
