Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and click OK. Click on the Startup tab, and look down the list for anything that says C Media or Mixer. Click the box to the left of the entry to remove the checkmark, exit out, and reboot.

Well,I tried that, and failed.A window came up and I had to set it back to normal because I didn't know what to do with the stupid window that told me I had tampered with the settings....what is that supposed to be set on???

Rather than use Windows audio controls, you can use the mixer (part of your on-board sound drivers) by double-clicking the system tray icon & then messing around with it. Won't hurt to dump it from startup, tho. You can still access it if you want, but it seems pretty useless to have it start every time Windows does.
The stupid window that came up on reboot is Windows' way of reminding you of what you just did, in case you're ridiculously lame and can't remember farther back than 3 seconds ago. Just close it when it comes up. :)
