I have a Compaq at home with Microsoft Windows ME. The other day my daughter was surfing the 'net and the system locked up. She couldn't get it to get the Internet Explorer to stop running through Ctrl-Alt-Del so she restarted the machine by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del again. When the computer rebooted, the machine had deleted all of the items on the desktop but My Documents, My Computer, Network Places, Recycle Bin, and one other one. If you press the start button with the mouse, it goes down but no menu pops up. If you open up a folder, it says that the security settings have prevented ActiveX from viewing the folder. I was able to get around and look on the disk by using the search button and looking for *.* files. The files are all there, none of the them are accessible or work. I can't log on to the internet, the machine locks up. I have three questions:

1. How can I post the Hijack log to you folks without infecting my office computer?

2. Is this fixable?

3. Is it a crime to shave my daughters head for doing this?:curse: FOR THE THIRD TIME!!!

The last two times I took the machine in and got taken for a good amount of dough. This time I'm either going to fix it myself or take a sledgehammer to the machine....

If nothing is on your desktop you can check that by going to a 'RUN' PROMPT and typing "explorer.exe" and see if your dekstop is then displayed (If the file isnt running you see a blank screen like your describing.)

I dont know much about ME but this sounds like it may be the cause although im not sure..... (Have you tried a system restore??)

Good luck....Welcome to CTH!!

Please advise:

1. How do I get to a run prompt? If I press the start button, all that happens is the button goes "down" and no menu comes up.

2. How can I run system restore on ME?

Thanks!
