View Full Version : zip self extracter wont work
emcquillen
January 10th, 2003, 05:11 AM
Among the many problems i have with this computer, the one that is the most annoying is the fact that I cannot open zip files. I try to download winzip or any other kind of zip application, and the self extractor fails. I get a flag saying the self extract failed because of a corruptoin that may have happened durring file transfer.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Thanks

Hi emcquillen - perhaps you would like to try this proggie CAM UnZip (http://www.camdevelopment.com/cam_unzip/default.htm). One our Mods, Dodge, uses it and thinks that its great. Post back if you have the same problem with this program.

Hi emcquillen - it might be a good idea if we had a look at your startups. Go here (http://www.spywareinfo.com/files/startuplist.zip) and download and run Startup List. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread

Try disabling Error Correction on your modem properties, may be causing this error when trying to download.

Hi emcquillen - you have a premium rate dialer on your PC plus some other unnecesssary software running at startup. Lets get rid of it and see if it helps.
Go to Start > Run and type
msconfig
then OK. Uncheck the below entries
C:\WINDOWS\LOADQM.EXE This is a microsoft resource hog and not necessary at startup.
TkBellExe = "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot Installed by Real Player and is unsolicted software, also not necessary
Remote Access = rnaapp.exe This bothers me a bit as I see you have DSL. It is the Windows Dial-Up Networking application. RNAAPP only appears in your Task List if your PC tries or tried to dial out at some stage, or if it is waiting for an inbound connection using Dial-Up Networking. I wonder if it has been activated by the dialer. If you dont know why it is running, uncheck it. If you have connection problems, you can always re-enable it.
Reboot when asked and then run a search for realsched.exe and rename it to realsched.old
Open your browser and go to Tools > Internet Options and click on the General Tab. Click on Settings (next to Temporary Internet Files) and then click on View Objects. Rightclick on each and when you find the below ActiveX Controls, delete them. If there are any damaged controls there, delete those also.
[RdxIE Class]
InProcServer32 = C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\RDXIE.DLL
CODEBASE = http://207.188.7.150/020d88fca2bf25...tzip/RdxIE6.cab

CODEBASE = http://connect.online-dialer.com/MaConnect.cab
This is a premium rate dialer, see here (http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/OnlineDialer.html). Also check in your Program Files folder as per the instructions in the link.
Let us know how you get on.

I folowed your instructions. My computer is noticabbly faster, but I still cannot install a zip program. Winzip I get a "corrupted file" flag, and CamZip I get "incorrect checksum".
What else could be causing this?
Thank you.

hi
I see there is another member with a strong hunch...
its been a while that we saw a problem like this with winzip
and it was a virus (and I remember it was a nasty one)
BUT... it can also be RAM that is failing... (what simmtester's docmemory can tell us)
my bet is on a virus, tho.
can you please do a full scan with an up to date AV?
CTH has a link to an online scan engine

There are plenty of other sorta zip files about like:
RAR
ACE
These are just like winzip

This is true but, if a computer can't run WinZip then something is very wrong.
Also reports of corrupted file and incorrect checksum are signs
of a serious problem. One would want to address those issues instead
of trying to install more programs.
The virus check would be the next procedure.

Yeah a virus check would be the next best thing to do. If there isnt any errors/virus's i would like see what would happen in 'scandisk' then maybe format c: and reinstall windows.
Ive always known reinstalling windows would always help my problems.

Hi emcquillen - I agree with jtdoom and Spider. This entry Remote Access = rnaapp.exe bothers me. Run the online scanner and report back.

Watts, Format & reinstall is ALWAYS the very last resort (or the first thing a useless tech suggests).
And FYI, depending on the type of virus infection and system setup, format C will not always be the cure-all you might think.

besides that, you don't want to run scandisk when you have
1; memory issue that leads to such errors (checksum fail/crc error)
because if you were to run scandisk, all data can get scrambled...
2; virus infection with a memory resident like CIH (a piggybacking nasty that can come riding along with chernobyl and the likes) I recalled that CIH can cause these checksum fail errors, and CIH can make all exe files icons appear as if they are zipped files...
because if you were to run scandisk, all data can get scrambled...
3; you have a controller error or loose IDE cable (which can also cause this)
because if you were to run scandisk, all data can get scrambled...
If you have data you cannot afford to lose, you try find the cause of the error.
If you have data you cannot afford to lose, you disconnect the hard drive, set up a nice new clean environment on antother hard disk or other machine, configure it so it does not alter data on hard disk you connect afterward, and then use this clean machine to scan the suspected hard disk
after scanning, one makes a copy of the drive
after making a full copy, one runs drive diagnostics (which can wipe all data...so you want to have the clone as backup)
if you can ghost that drive, use ghost in forensic mode ( /FRO )
(read the help...)
for instance, ghost /ia /ib /fro
but like smurfy says, we do not recommend format if we don't know what is REALLY going on, and we have to have in mind that data can cost more than a dozen computers
(loss of data can ruin a business)
okay, I'll get of my soap box now.
