Hi there
Have got a really annoying problem which is difficult to describe hope you can help.
I bought a canon flatbed scanner almost a year ago and had trouble installing the 'twain driver' for this model. When I follow the instructions nothing happens the way it should. Last time I did something by chance and managed to get the driver to install but no such luck this time. The instructions say turn the computer on and when add new hardware wizard appears click next. What actually happens when I switch on is a message appears saying found new hardware windows is searching for software and the asks to insert disk marked 'canoscann670u.When I do this it tells me that the driver cannot be found on this drive.I had this trouble at first install but finally got it to work.I seem to remember that the manual was wrong. Have asked canon uk but without reply for the second time.Has anyone had this problem please help

I was just looking at the install instructions for my Canon Scanner.
It says to install the software by clicking on the Start>Run button
and type X:\Setup (where X is the drive letter of your CDROM),
and click OK. I've always installed my scanner by doubleclicking
on the setup.exe file on the CDROM disc. Probably no help, but
I just thought I'd mention it since I've never installed it the way you mentioned.

Okay, may be some help here:
http://12.129.248.84/techsupport.php?p=csn670u&q=download
---------------------------------------------
"This self-extracting file contains the most recent version of the ScanGear CS-U (TWAIN) driver for the CanoScan N670U scanner. Save the file CanoScan_N670U_v7010.exe to your hard drive, then run or double-click the file. If you are upgrading from a previous installation of ScanGear CS-U, you will be required to remove your current ScanGear CS-U (TWAIN driver) driver before installing this latest driver. Detailed instructions are provided to guide you through both the uninstallation of your previous driver, and the installation of this most recent version."

I'll jump in here for a minute.
This scanner is connected with USB? Enabled in BIOS?
Any splats (exclamation/question marks or red X's) in Device Manager?
Unit makes a noise when it's power cable is plugged in?

Hi Spider
not sure if enabled in bios but think so its a gigabyte 7ZXE motherboard with amibios. The device manager shows 7 entries under other devices marked with a yellow question mark (? canoscanN670U) It was making a noise at startup a familiar shuffle but this has stopped maybe some setting I have altered yes it is usb connection

If the USB is enabled in BIOs it will show up near the bottom
of items in Device Manager Universal Serial Bus controllers
If USB is in DM then get your drivers ready for the scanner...
Remove all splats from DM
shut down
disconnect and reconnect the USB cable from both ends
if there are any other USB devices plugged into the tower
unplug them so the scanner is the only USB device connected
bootup
point to drivers when prompted.

Hi Spider
Did all that and when I booted up I got 'FOUND NEW HARDWARE' followed by 'INSERT DISK MARKED CANOSCAN N670U' after this it tells me 'DRIVER CAN NOT BE FOUND'
Under usb controllers I have USB ROOT HUB AND
VIA TECH 3038 PCI TO USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER

I just want to check that some steps are being performed correctly.
The driver file your using is the one wingless pointed out
above, the CanoScan_N670U_v7010.exe file.
You've double clicked on that file and extracted the files
which are automatically extracted to C:\Temp where
three folder are created.
You've opened up the C:\Temp\N670U_CSUv7010
folder and clicked on SetupSG.exe
You've tried running the uninstaller for drivers in
C:\Temp\Deldrv_v12062\Deldrv.exe first and then
tried installing.
You've of course read the instructions created in
C:\Temp\CanoScan_N670U_CSUv7010
p.s. I looked at your profile. I wanted to know your version of
WindowsXX, but it's not there. Could you input that please.

Hi spider
I went over those details again but still got the prompt to insert canoscan cd as above.
Have updated profile

When it prompts you for the Canon CD there is a button named Browse...
on that interface somewhere?

no

When I insert cd and press ok I get a box headed 'new hardware found' at the right hand side of this box there are buttons as follows --ok,cancel,skip file, details and browse.
BUT what do I browse for:confused:
Spider
January 13th, 2003, 10:52 PM
Browse means "point to where the drivers are on the hard drive"
You have to give me a minute, the SetupSG.exe file seems to be
deleting the files it extracts. I will try and find other drivers.

I can't seem to find your canoscan scanner model type in the thread
anywhere. Your profile doesn't have the model. Can you provide that?
btw, tnx for putting the O/S in the profile

Hi Spider
It's a canon canoscan N670U LIDE 20
It derives it's power from the usb connection (there are no other connections on this model
:D

Try this one right from Canon's Website (http://downloadlibrary.usa.canon.com/cpr/software/scanners/shared/CanoScan_N670U_v7010.exe).
When you click on this thing, when it's done it opens up
Internet Explorer and shows you red links to click on.
click on Windows 98 Installation. another IE will open
and it has specific 1,2,3,4 etc. instructions.
If you follow those instructions "to the letter" you should be
fine.

Hi again
I have been looking hard at ways to find out what is going wrong and I tried typing this which seems useful but I don't fully understand the result. It brings up a colour coded readout which is very long but I picked out this section and pasted it. What I did was click on start run and type in hwinfo /ui note the space after the 'o'. Does this tell anyone anything.

Thanks VM
Went through that but nothing seems to help. So I went to see a technician at a major retailer and after a lot of effort by the gentleman He came to the conclusion that something was wrong with the system not the scanner or driver, as the scanner installed very easily on another pc. Unfortunately He could not put his finger on what it was. I have had conflicting reports about what temperature the cpu should run at from 25 degrees to 50 degrees centigrade However mine runs at 79 - 82 and no-one seems able to confirm whether this is too hot or not, but most agree that if it is too hot that strange things can happen.I pointed this out to the retailer who supplied all the system and he curiously agreed to refund my money with barely a word.

What you want to do is look at what is plugged into
the PCI slot that is closest to the AGP slot.
Whatever card that is (modem, ethernet, or sound) and remove
it's drivers and the graphics card drivers from Device Manager
shutdown
pull card (modem or whatever) and bootup
install drivers for graphics
shutdown
install (modem or whatever) in a different PCI slot
other than the one closest to the AGP slot
bootup and install drivers for the device
Make sure you have the correct drivers for the device your
going to pull. Get them ready before you do anything.
So you should have the graphics driver and the modem (or
whatever) driver set to go before you start.

The temparatures that you've mentioned aren't high enough to "fry" the cpu, but they're certainly high enough that you can expect instability and a short life-span for the chip (and maybe the motherboard as well). His lack of explanation would lead me to believe that he's done this before and didn't want to discuss it - maybe an overclocked system without adequate cooling.
If he's offered a refund, I'd take it and go buy something else.
