Hello,
When I click dialing properties in telephony inside control panel, I get this. This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. I click details and get this. Rundll32 caused an invalid page fault in module TAPI.DLL at 0014:00007638.
This also happenes when I try to connect to the internet using my desktop icon for DSL.Sometimes the IE big e icon will do the same thing. Can you help me on this one?
Thanks, John

To resolve this issue, replace the Tapiaddr.dll file, and then remove and reinstall Dial-Up Networking. To do so, use the following steps:

1.) Rename the Tapiaddr.dll file to Tapiaddr.old, and then extract the Tapiaddr.dll file from your original Windows 95 media to the Windows\System folder. For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "renaming" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the Renaming Files topic. For information about how to extract files, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q129/6/05.ASP)

NOTE: The Tapiaddr.dll file is in the Win95_11.cab cabinet file on the Windows 95 CD-ROM, or on disk 11.

2.) Remove Dial-Up Networking, and then reinstall it. For information about how to do so, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to Remove and Reinstall Dial-Up Networking and TCP/IP (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q181/5/99.ASP)

Hello,
Thanks for these instructions, but my Compaq Presario 4504 did not come with a W95 CD-Rom. However, I have been in similar situations before and been prompted to insert the W95 CD-Rom. I clicked ok and files started to be coppied and things were fixed. Why? Also. When I click the big e to connect, I get this. IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault in module TAPI.dll at 0014:00003alf. I connect to the internet by clicking an icon I found & drug to desktop. Icon text says 0138835-Error Messages in Mmsystem.dll or Run32. I came here for a fix that didn't work, yet this is how I connect.
Now what? Thanks much,John :)

John, the fact that on previous occasions when prompted for a Win95 CD the system has copied files from somewhere indicates that somewhere on your hard drive the windows CABs have been copied, you just need to find them.

Do a find/files for *.cab and see what you turn up.

Then follow Theoran's instructions above.

HI,
Renaming the file is not a problem. I can find the cab files. When I click on one, I get the (open with). I try note pad which is too small so it asks if I want use word pad. I do, but when it opens I can't read a thing. Acrobat reader is also the wrong thing to use.
I read how to extract original compressed windos files. Do I have an extracting tool in W-95? If so, where is it and how do I use it? I am really confused. As for uninstalling and reinstalling Dial-up networking and tcp/ip, this one really scares me. All the references to having the W95 CD ready worry me. If I rename the tapiaddr.dll to old I won't be able to connect to the net, right? It won't let me rename it while I am on line because it being used. Just a guess, ther is no easier way to do this right?
Thanks John

John, if the WINDOWS cab files are there, you can safely uninstall and reinstall any windows component. The problem is, Windows often loses the path to those folders and you need to point it back in the right direction.
When Windows prompts you for Win95 CD, click "browse" and navigate to the folder you found those cabs in - eg C:\Win95\Cabs\

So, in short,
restart
Add/Remove Progs>Windows Setup
Un-tick Dial-Up Networking
Restart
Reverse procedure (tick DUN)
Browse to CABS when prompted to insert CD
Restart

Better?

Then update DUN to DUN 1.3 and Winsock 2 (available from M$ site)

Hello,
Too many other programs got to where they weren't working right and then I couldn't even connect to the net. I had to reformat the hard drive. Thanks for all your help. You guys are the best.
John :)
