I have Windows 2000 pro. Recently I have updated windows with windows update, and updated my video drivers from NVidia. My computer freezes. Here are the specifics as I can figure them out.

I can not run Ulead Photo Explorer, it freezes when it is trying to load the plugins at the logo. I cannot run any real arcade games, also freezes instantly. I cannot run any shockwave games on or offlilne, results in an instant freezeup. Some web pages I come to totally freeze up the computer, why I don't know.
All of these freezes result in shutting down the computer by turning off the electricity because that is the only way I can do it.

I am baffled ! Please help. Oh, and I have tried uninstalling the shockwave player and reinstalling it when everything else is shut down including the antivirus(Norton). Still doesn't work!

Do you have Msconfig installed? If not, Try to go here and download and install it. http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm
Once installed and rebooted, Try this.
Click Start > Run > type msconfig and click OK
Click the Startup tab. Locate the entry for NView and un-check it. Click apply/ok and reboot.

You should use regcleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml for removing shortcut entries because of the backup feature.

Please also check your event viewer for any errors and post them here being sure to include their eventIDs

I have used a registry cleaner.
I installed msconfig and checked for NView under the startup tab. No such thing listed.
The event log was a mess of errors.
Two errors listed many times:
under the application log:
Perfdisk(source) event-2001
usernv(source)- event-1000

Hi Pamee54

Both those errors and the fixes are outlined here EventID.Net (http://www.eventid.net/).

Thankyou
I understand the fix for the 2001 Perfdisk event, but how do I find out what caused the application error. It is probably a dll file of somekind, but how do I find out which one?

Hi again Pamee54 - I dont think that you scrolled down far enough on the page. Make sure that you check the source against the Event ID number:

Perfdisk(source)
usernv(source)

There are several listed for usernv.

I explored the Perfdisk in the registry using regedit, and I did what they recommended in the microsoft knowledge base by creating a new registry by putting in an entry called "disable performance counters" and adding the DWORD value=1
This still doesn't correct the perfdisk error, and I am still getting the same one.
Do you think reinstalling Windows will correct this? Not that I want to do that with all the work it will take to do all the updates again and reinstall all the software. Any other ideas?

try rolling back to your old video driver or uninstalling the update
try a 'go back' maybe(restore).
also keep watching for more updates for windows
sometime the updates heve there little probs
(maybe uninstall the windows updates)

good luck.
