Hello!
I'm baaa-aaack. I have a problem with Windows Update. Since February of 2002, I have downloaded the same recommended update 11 times! Security Update, April 2, 2001 - version 1,0,2195,0 - was successfully installed .... 11 times now! About every second or third time I go to Windows Update, it shows up as a recommended update again. I'm getting a little tired of this! Does anybody know if this is exactly the same one over and over again ... or do they change something in it, or add something to it each time, so you should keep getting it? Thank you. Patches

Hi Patches,
In Control Panel Internet Options General(tab) Settings...(button) View Objects...(button) delete Update Class Return to Windows Update and you should be prompted to "Trust" and "Install", say "YES" Try your install now.

Hiya Spider,
Thanks for replying! Okay, I did what you suggested, then went to Updates to see what would happen. I wasn't asked to "Trust" and "Install" because I didn't choose to download either recommended update! They recommended exactly the same update for the 12th time! That's the Security Update, April 2, 2001 one. Another annoying thing they keep doing is, recommending that I get the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (Windows 98, Windows Me), download size 452 KB, 2 minutes .... but I'm running IE 5.5! Now what?

I would suggest you ignore the IE6 sitting in the critical list. Remove
it every visit because it's automatically selected for download every visit. M$ is trying to force that on you and you don't really want that when running win98. The quickest way to get past this glitch (I've dealt with this update problem before) is to reinstall win98 over top. It will force IE and win98 back to older versions and you can go back to Update and get back to IE5.5 SP2. You should be able to get proper update installs after that. Two things to try before reinstallings are:

Thanks for replying, Spider!
Thank goodness! I was afraid that IE6 was something I really should get ... I'll be more than happy to ignore it, thank you. Oh boy, that "reinstall Win98 over top," scares the begeezers out of me, Spider. I've never done that and I sure don't want to start now. I've never installed or uninstalled anything major in a computer before ... just little stuff like games and pop-up stoppers and such. I've done the two other things you suggested, with the following results: "System File Checker identified that the following file may be corrupted. File: setupx.dll Location: C:\Windows\System You should restore this file from your installation disks." Then I did the IE self-repair and then did the first one again but the same corrupted file notification came up again. (As a bonus ... it did bring all my icons back to their proper colours!) I've started to have that same problem again. I kind of think it's connected to running all the tests and fixes in Norton's One Button Checkup ... seems that after it fixes "errors" it finds, my icons lose colour. Then, if I run that IE self-repair .. the colours all come back! Now, it is my understanding that, when you do a reinstall of Windows 98SE, you lose everything you have in your computer, including all your email addresses and programs ... is that correct? Because if it is, I'd really be up the creek without a paddle, Sir.
