how do u get dial up modem working with suse and ubuntu
i cant get suse or ubuntu to recognize agere, lucent chip, dial up modem.......and my external netcomm megamodem is recognised but only dials then disconnects after 3 - 10 seconds. can anyone help me??

Ok, I seem to remember this from some time ago with an old suse install I had. Some modems are " winmodems", they have a chipset which only works with windows. I dont know if there is a compatible linux driver available, but as far as I know the driver for winmodems is specific to windows. As for your netcomm megamodem, I don't know, but it sounds like your connection is not being authenticated by the server.

find the linux drivers for these modems by searching on google. Unless you pay though, the speed might be 28.8kbps instead of 56kbps.

What interface does your external modem use? (ie: serial, usb, parallel) I would assume it is a serial modem, which is very good. What steps did you take in order to dial-out with this modem?

yeah sorry its taken me so long to reply, got my external netcomm megaimodem working with suse, it works beautifully, had too take out area code, and the mount point was dif, its not dev/mod so its a bit tricky, plus the key is too instigate YAST at installation.
now i just have to get my mates linux ubuntu working on a ESS dial up modem as his (and my agere modems or winmodems are useles |
