i'm trying to install a dial-up AMR fax modem and it tells me it can't find a com port.... i'm using a cable modem also.... am i able to use both? i also tried to put a modem in an old computer that i recently just remformatted and it seemed to install it but when i signed up for some free AOL to test it . it wouldn't connect. going into modem properties beside com2 it says no modem installed. or doesn't show my modem name in the AOL setup even know it detects a modem as being there. it seemed to install an updated inf. file could be a simple solution i just have no clue on how to do it.... thanks for any help..... i'm using win me not 98 by the way.....

hi
an AMR modem (what goes in the the tiny brown slot) cannot be used as a FAX-modem.
it can only be used as a modem and you can use it to surf the internet.
as such, it is useful as a backup method to go online with a dial-up connection when cable fails or is unavailable, but you cannot fax with it.
in any case, you need the motherboard manual.
the motherboard may have a jumper in place that disables its functions
and, you have to also check BIOS settings, because it can be disabled in BIOS too.
of course, you also need its specific drivers
(fwiw, most people do not think highly of AMR modems. They are like winmodems... )
-------
I have no idea about the OLD machine
what sort of modem? Model?
what kind of slot does it use?
what sort and speed CPU does the machine have?
(an underpowered machine is no good for a winmodem)
in short, we need more info
