Hello,
I'v recently upgrade my pc from a P120mhz to a AMD Duron 600mhz and ever since then I'v had weird ass problems, I had the guy that istalled it thell me it was the hard disk so I bought another one, well 3 frigging hard drives later I'm still hAving the same problems like wierd windowz errors, and all to common total sytem freeze like the kind that makes you want to break your comp, like when you 15 mins into a game of Unreal Tournament, or found some killer page on the net, so it anyone could give me a hand, I would be very greatful.

What errors are you getting ? Do you have any mods installed on UT like tacticalops ?
In order for us to help could you please give us a run down of your system...cpu, ram etc.
and the full errors and codes you're getting ?
Thanks,
MiShY

As mishy says, more detail is needed but my first thought (without knowing all the necessary facts) would be HEAT.
If you've still got the same cooling system in the case you had with your P120 and your now running a 600mz Duron chip, it's going to get hot (especially under heavy load - like a graphic intensive game _UT or website with lots of multimedia).
As well as the normal stats about the system, tell us what cooling, motherboard model (if known), and Display adapter (Graphics card) you've got.
What version of W95 (a/b/c?).

Well I had to get a new case to fit the new mother board, and the M/B came with a new heat sink, I'm not sure about the errors I'll wright them down when I get 'em then post again, and no I'm just playing the demo of UT, and my system specs are:
Pc266 M805LR systemboard
600mhz Duron
32mb of Ram
Cirrus Logic 5462
and a Maxtor 10.2gb HD

What kind of video card? The Cirrus Logic 5462 is a sound card, right? If you're running an AGP video card, make sure you don't use the PCI slot next to it.
32 megs of RAM is way too little. In my opinion run at least 96 megs.
Have you made any major changes in CMOS?
Are you sure the CPU fan is working?
Have you installed all the motherboard drivers?
Are you sure you set the vcore and I/O correctly for the CPU?

Cirrus Logic 5462 is my video card
my soundcard is built into my M/B
I know 32 is not alot but I'v been spending money on HD's and plus the initial, 400 bucks for the M/B and system chip set. Do you think it could be something wrong with my Ram cause it's not brand new my old sytem had an older Ram type so the guy that built my comp pulled th 32megs from a comp that he had running with 96 megs.
No changes since I got it back.
yes the fans are all running my processor never gets hotter than 35 degrees.
I dunno about the drivers as far as I know yup.
and the I/O I have no clue what that is.
10 mins before I posted this my comp halted once when I got into windowz and 4 mins later when I logged onto the net and went to your site....

If you are running a 100 fbs (front side "bus") and you're not running PC100 RAM you will have problems like you have explained. If you pulled older RAM, my guess is that it's not keeping up with the bus speed. If the RAM is not at least PC100, that will be a problem.
You would know if the motherboard drivers are installed cause you would have had to use the CD to install them yourself. If you didn't, I suggest that you do. That also could be a problem.
There are two voltage settings on the motherboard for your Duron 600 CPU: The vcore voltage for Duron600 is 1.6 and the I/O voltage is 3.3 which must be correct or you can have serious problems. Because of the lockups that you're getting you may not have the two settings correct. However, the I/O voltage setting may by automatic, as the BIOS may detect it by itself...so no need to set the I/O 3.3 setting on the motherboard.

So do you mean the FSB of my Motherboard?
Cause the FSB for my Motherboard is 266mhz,
so does this mean I need at least PC133 SDRAM?
Ya I have installed my drivers.
I'll check out the Volts in a sec, but I think it really might be the ram cause I'v replaced every thing but it.
Thanks for helping so far.

Hi again,
Let's just put it this way. If you're running a Duron, Athlon or even a PIII *shudder*, then you need to be using at least PC100 if set at 100 FSB, PC133 if running the bus higher.
Your Quote:
"So do you mean the FSB of my Motherboard?
Cause the FSB for my Motherboard is 266mhz,
so does this mean I need at least PC133 SDRAM?"
If you're running a Duron 600, the settings must be 6x100. The 6 is the mutiple, the 100 is the FSB setting. These are set on the motherboard or the BIOS detects them automatically.
The 266MHz is not the bus speed for setting up the Duron 600 CPU.

So what does "If you're running a Duron 600, the settings must be 6x100. The 6 is the
mutiple, the 100 is the FSB setting." mean
Sorry but it's just a wee bit confusing. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/confused.gif

I say ol' friend, you need to do some reading. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Drag out that motherboard manual and go thru it. Then go to www.amd.com (http://www.amd.com) and do some reading there too.
I've given you everything you need to know to setup your motherboard (PC Chips PC266) for that AMD Duron 600MHz CPU you mentioned you now have. If you don't understand it by now then that may be the reason the computer is doing the freeze on you.
Look closely at the motherboard manual. Find the jumpers on the motherboard to set the CPU voltage and the I/O voltage to 1.6 and 3.3 respectively. Then set the multiplier to 6, then the FSB to 100. That is the settings for the AMD Duron 600.
6x100 = 600 That's how you get it to run at 600MHz. You must be running PC100 RAM at least.
If you don't have the voltage set correctly, it's a good bet that the CPU is overheating. That could cause a lockup or freeze up when you're working it hard like game playing. Or it's that RAM you're using out of an old computer. Dig in and good luck.

Alright thank you for your help, I'm going to buy some new RAM today and see what happens
but I can't change any of the voltage settings there all automatically there, theres no way to change them there on the screen dimmed out w/the numbers but I can't touch it.

System hangs & lock ups are usually caused by interupt conflicts. Check the device manager for conflicts. Also, if you are using mixed ram, be sure that the fastest ram is in the #1 slot. ÿ

I just got 2 Fatal exeption errors one was
1. 0E occurred at 0028:72617041
2. 06 occured at 0028:00000107
Then my screen went black and all I could see was the mouse.
And the only thing wrong in the system settings is a missing driver for some voice thing for my modem.
