For quite some time now, I've been having a problem with my work PC. Every now and then I'll try to clean up my computer. I'll start with going through the files I don't need. Then move on to the Internet Options. Delete Cookies, Files (including offline files), clear the history. Then proceed to do a Disc Cleanup (this is where the problem is), then to a defrag (maby a few defrags). Every time I start the "disc cleanup" it opens goes through about three bars on the gague, then.... nothing. It doesnt even scan the drives to let me select what I want to delete. It just sit's there. I have even recently left the comp on all weekend trying to do a cleanup. Well it's monday, and now I'm here for help. This is driving me nutts. Any help is greatly appreciated. Unfortuniately because it is a work computer, I cannot run HJT, sorry.

PC:
IBM NetVista Q6U
P4 2.0GHz
80GB Hard drive
512mb RAM
Windows 2000 (automatic updates on)

Feel free to ask for any more info.

Hi buddy give this a go..

From Microsoft KB 812248 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812248 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812248)
1.Click Start, and then click Run.
2.Type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
3.Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
Explorer\VolumeCaches
4.On the File menu, click Export, and then click Desktop, type VolumeCaches in the File name box, and then click Save.
Note This step creates a backup of the VolumeCaches registry key. If you experience any problems after you complete the steps that are listed in this procedure, you can use this backup to restore the VolumeCaches key to its original state. To restore the key, double-click the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop, and then click Yes.
5.Expand the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
Explorer\VolumeCaches
6.Delete the Compress old files registry key.
7.Quit Registry Editor.
Or, The Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding:
