its very unlikely to catch a virus in linux. Theres some out there but nothing to worry about. See this article

Oh that makes me feel so good!
It's amusing to think that so many people pay so much for licencing and to buy big expensive programs etc... Then they have to pay through the roof for anti-virus etc... I install SuSE 10 - free, it comes with thousands of programs - free, and I don't have to pay for anti-virus etc... This raises another question... Linux is growing, more people know about it now than ever before... I know Windows will dominate possibly indefinately, but why do people not choose Linux? People I know all think it looks better, most of my Windows using friends use FireFox and OpenOffice, so the transfer across wouldn't exactly be rough... Why do people choose to spend hundreds on insecure Windows software?!

Because Linux is for experienced people who know what their doing, the majority of people really don't know things like if you delete something from the recycling bin it's still really their or what virtual memory is or how a motherboard works or what 802.11 N is or how many bits are in a gigabyte or why and how they should clean their registries. Windows is just easier if you're inexperienced, as with mac, most software is Windows only.
EDIT: And what renagede said about media.

Ah yes, and whilst on the subject... Is there a way to play .mpg files on Linux?
None of my current programs play them... Linux is definately getting easier to use though. I'm not exactly a computer ace, and I have no troubles with it. As for games, I guess you mean corporate games, I mean like Half-Life etc... I have loads of games that came pre-installed that keep me more than occupied (Armagetron being a high favourite!!!). BTW, IMO I'd relate it closer to 98... Though it has it's problems, it's not that rough-edge.
