2 computers same issue!!!

All of a sudden when I click on Internet Explorer a window comes up
Work offline
No connection to the internet is currently
available.......................
work off line otr try again
when I try again nothing happens. The weird thing is that this started happening on my son's computer a few weeks ago. I had just formatted his computer and reinstalled Windows, so I just ignored it and clicked Network Connections to go online then opened Internet Explorer. Help!!

Are these 2 computers sharing the internet connection through a router?
Are you using cable, dsl, dialup?
Whose your I.S.P?

No router. 1 computer upstairs, one down, same phone line. We just don't go online at the same time. Dialup. ABC Internet, local provider.,

Click on Start>Settings>ControlPanel>InternetOptions>Connec tions>LanSettings. Select "Automatically Detect Settings" and click on OK.

Now start Internet Explorer. Once it's started and has loaded your home page, close Internet Explorer. Now go back to that same auto setting and remove the check mark and click on OK.
Now see if IE finds the connection consistently.
