e-mail tracking

Is there a way to track an email on the server side to see if it was received/read?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I know if you are using Outllok Express that you can go into the options and set it up to receive a read receipt.

Of course, whether you get any notification is totally up to the person receiving the email as they can simply refuse the receipt request !!

other than that though, there is nothing you can do!!

Thank you for the quick responses.

If I am understanding this correctly, you will have to forgive me, I am new to the IT world, there is no way to track an email on the server side. I was asked by the VP, who sent the email, to see if the recipient received the email and/or read the email.

As mentioned earlier, all you can do is request a received or read receipt..

A "Received" receipt will tell your boss if the email was delivered to the intended mailbox however, that is all it will tell you..

He can also send a "Read Receipt" request but the option to acknowledge that is totally up to the person receiving the email.. They can cancel or ignore the request and your boss would be totally in the dark as to whether it was read or not !!

Yes, after the fact.

I am wanting to see if there is anything saved on the server. I know with outlook you can set it up to send for either a read receipt or a received receipt, but I am being asked to look on the server to see if/when the recipient received the email.

All your server may say is when it was sent.. It will not say how many other mail servers it had to go through.. when those servers received and forwarded the email or when the recipients server received and delivered the email..

Perhaps your boss should just phone for confirmation !!!

Even if the server shows that it went through, there still is no way to know if it was read. It could have been accidently filtered out or deleted by the person receiving it before it was read.

You can also track an email if you add an image with a querystring into the body of the email to call a sever-side script on your webserver. Again, this depends on the user preferences because if images are disabled then your script will not be called.
