Hello,
Trying to get into Win ME on a Compaq Presario 5000 and having no luck. I can only boot via SAFE Mode  :curse:
This has been an all day project and Im ready to kill another Compaq. If I try to boot with the RESTORE disk I get a bunch or garbled text on the screen.
I am truly clueless.
HELP !!!!

Hi AiletteR - welcome to CTH. Have you tried a System Restore from Safe Mode? Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click on System Restore.

Hi again AiletteR - try this. Go to Start > Run and type scanreg /fix (note the space after scanreg) then after it does its thing, try rebooting to Windows again. Let us know how you get on.

Hi again, tried it, didn't work :(
It went to safe mode option again. I have no clue as to why it's not letting me boot in normal mode. I can't even run the restore disk :( The system refuses any attempts for a normal boot.
I can't get online with it because Safe Mode doesnt allow me to do much. I cant reformat because there is important data on the hard drive. Is there a way to restore ME with the OS CD without losing settings (like with XP)?
Thanks !!

Hi AiletteR - you can install windows over the top of itself without losing data however this will not work with a Restore CD. If you use a Restore CD, your OS will be restored to factory default.
I've been reading back through your thread and I think it would be a really good idea to run a scan for viruses. There are some viruses that can cause your problem and also disable System Restore.
You can download F-Prot for DOS onto floppies from here (http://www.f-prot.com/download/index.html) and run it on your disabled PC. Instructions on how to do this are on this (http://www.f-prot.com/support/index.html) page.
Post back and let us know how you get on.
