I downloaded a free version of Registry Mechanic (info from Microsoft Windows mag). It performs a 'deep scan' and gives no. of problems and then msge to say have to register and pay for full version in order to 'repair'. Some of the errors logged are 15 File Extensions, Shared DLLs, 31 Add/Remove Programs, Temp Files/Shortcuts, and 104 Deep Scan. I do have spybot (but having trouble downloading updates and have asked them direct), adware and a trial version of ZoneAlarm.
Do I have to purchase Registry Mechanic to fix these problems or do I ignore them? I am getting confused with what I need to get rid of which specific errors (ie spyware, adware, etc). I run Nortons virus and security (2006). I have spent some hours today following tips in the magazine on how to improve performance, security and customisation. Many thanks.

alot of that can be cleaned up with ccleaner (http://ccleaner.com). its free :D Without knowing what those so called deep scans are, I cannot tell you about those.

Personally I use ace utilities (http://www.acelogix.com/) for my registry cleaner. It has a 30 free uncrippled trial. However, before using any registry cleaner be sure to have a restore point saved just in case. Unless you know what you are doing, you can do serious damage to your os.

Renegade, THANK you soooo much for the link to Ace Utilities! That is the best program I have EVER seen for files-registry clean up! Really useful options and great for the non-whiz like me. Damn...how have I missed it all these years??

Many many thanks. Used trial of Ace (ditched Registry Mechanic). Great program but leads to lots more learning - ticked 'restore point' in Ace so presume that is all I had to do. Thanks
