hello,
have upgraded our computer from win98se to XP and popped our old hard drive with software programes in new computer BUT:
...... some programmes do not work (says something about a .dll not found)..... surely progs work in higher level OS systems?
Have even tried reinstalling some but same messege appears saying a certain .dll is missing (cant rememb er which one).
any thoughts of what to do to get them to work in xp?
cheers

First, just popping a hard drive in with programs installed on it will not work for a lot of programs because many programs install more than just the files int their directory (registry keys, DLLs in the windows directory, etc). So, for most programs you will need to reinstall.
Second, the bad news is some old programs are not compatible with XP. You may need an update to the program, a new version of the program, or in the worst case give up on it. :(

yep you will have to reinstall those programs. Hopefully you still have the disks that came with them. However as previously stated, not all win98 programs will even work in xp. Some may just need to use the compatibility thing that comes with xp. See this (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/appcompat.mspx)
Also you can type the name of the program into google with the word winxp and find out info on whether or not it will even work in winxp.

I used to ry download stuff that would not be compatiblw with XP. Now I try to always remember to check the compatibility. Used to make me mad but in the long run I don't think I missed anything really important. So PLZ don't :cry2:
Besides these days I find a box of Kleenex expensive :disgust:

XP has application compatibility mode that you should try first - basically fakes win 9x to the application. Works sometimes.
If not, post back the names of the programs, we'll try to help.
