My son has just came in with the biggest caterpillar i have ever seen.. about 5 inches long with a thorn on its head.. i am in UK

Yeah, I used to squeeze thier heads off when I stripped tobacco. Wouldn't recommend doing it without gloves. :rotflmao:

thanks but i dont think the UK climate is warm enough to grow Tobacco.. other wise Mr BM would have a garden full

To be 100% sure of what it is you should run hijackthis on it. Silent Runners may show you some good info as well. Most of the time all you will find is moth.exe and thats fine but if you run into Lepidoptera.dll you should seek help with it. Keep in mind that these things tend to be Polymorphic so use care when viewing it.

Very interesting it was too. All the descriptions Ive read of the Tobacco Hornworm describe it as having white stripes . Has yours BM?

that looks like one similar i found lieing in my driveway last year (United States)... they are usually called the "devil caterpillar"

the one i found was exactly the same but had these big spikes coming out from all over its body...but it is really a big baby and it is harmless

OMG that is hideous.. if i was a bird i would think twice about trying to eat that. I am in uk and i have never ever seen a caterpillar that big

haha i know, i wasnt sure whether or not i should be handling it when i first found it... my dog wouldnt even go near it

you probably have a differnt variation of this ugly little worm over there in your garden.......

I've never seen anything like that in the UK, mind you we did have a really hot summer this year and the autumn is the hottest since records began in the 1600's, so maybe it's here because of the weather.

:D I've never seen anything like it. It's the horn on the head that makes it look dangerous. Perhaps it did come form Mars, lol.
