Phantom Emails in Outlook Express

I have been receiving phantom (invisible) emails in Outlook Express. It will say "3 new messages" but there will only be two. And at times, it may say "1 new message" when in actuality, there are none. Is this some kind of ghost spam? Or possibly a virus? These invisible emails come at least once a day.

sometimes if you delete a message that you have not read, it is still considered new until you delete it from the delete folder.
