I have cable internet service but when I open Internet Explorer, I am not connected and have to Restart. This usually happens after the pc has been sitting for awhile. I don't think it is the cable service because we have a wireless network to our other computer and it stays connected. I thought maybe I had a virus but I did Spybot and Ad-Aware scans and nothing came up. What else could this be?
Thanks,
Pat

Welcome :)
Is the other PC connected to the modem? Does it disconnect?
Have you tested by connecting directly to the modem?
Have you tried resetting the modem?
Have you checked with your ISP?
Have you check your Network card properties to make sure that it doesn't go into standby mode? If you check the netword Card properties from Device Manger then you should find some options to tweak, such as Power Down mode and Duplex mode.

Hello, If this happens after being idle for a while, it may be that your network card is being disabled by windows to save power.
Open the properties for your network card.
Right click on the network connection icon in the task bar and select 'Open Network Connections'
Right click on your network connection and select Properties
In the new dialog that comes up, click on Configure. This will open the properties dialog for the network card.
Disable the power management feature for the card
In this dialog, switch to the 'Power Management' tab
Make sure that 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' is not checked.
Now close all the dialogs.

Thanks for the welcome.
The other pc is connected to the modem and it does NOT disconnect.
I called my ISP and they had me reset the router because yesterday I could not get internet service at all on either pc. I was able to connect after that, but this morning, it was disconnected again. I did not have time to restart it before leaving. As far as the network card properties, I think my husband checked that but I need to make sure. I will check that out tonight and post the results.
Thanks for your help so far!

I solved the problem. My firewall was blocking access. I had checked on that earlier and thought that was the problem, so I added the address to my trusted zone, but evidently I didn't do it right because my husband added it to the trusted zone and this time it worked.
Thanks for everyone's help!
