BIOS Detects CD-ROM Windows ME Doesn't

The BIOS detects the CD-ROM and the green LED lights when booting. But neither My Computer nor Explore display it. ME did display the CD-ROM until recently. Don't think any changes were made to the PC.

Ran AVG which didn't find a virus. Tomorrow I'll take in a ME boot disc w/CD support and a CD with data and see what happens.

Hello Jim

Do you see any entry in the device manager? That would be start/settings/control panel/system/hardware/device manager. There should be an entry showing the cdrom. Also are there any exclamation points showing?

If it's not listed try to add it with Add/Remove Hardware in the control panel.

Both primary and secondary IDE controller software have a yellow exclamation mark in device manager. Updating the drivers run but accomplishes nothing as the system claims the latest drivers are installed. The system is running so slow I am about ready to throw the PC off the roof.

Running scandisk now. So far found 167,000 bytes of file 'fragments." Hope I can find a recent checkpoint I can restore to which I suppose I'll try next.

You might want to try deleting the items in Device Mgr and restart and let Windows re-install the hardware, see if that helps.

I have forgotten much about ME. There isn't any Device Manager entry for the CD-ROM. I suppose I can remove the VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller but will ME reload the drivers without the installation disk (which I haven't found)? Does ME have a sfc function and if so how do I execute it?

There is only one checkpoint and system restore will not restore to that checkpoint. I ran FreeMem and freed up 96 MB of memory took no other action and a few minutes later available memory was 0.

Tried to run HouseCall to check for malware but the system hung twice when trying to install the required Java code.

When I find the installation CD, can I re:install ME without damaging the user applications and data?

Have you tried Add Hardware in the control panel?

What is the make of the cdrom? You may be able to get the drivers from the Manufacturer site.
