When I boot I recieve the message " While initializing IOS: Window protection error. you need to restart your computer". When I reboot I get the option to start normal, safe mode, etc. I can not start in normal. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

Hello Dere

Choose the safe mode option and check in device manager,(right click on my computerand then left click on properties). Double click on anything with an"!" or an"x" and select remove and then reboot. Windows will then re-install drivers for the device. Have your W95 installation disk(s) handy as you may be asked to provide it so that Windows can re-install the appropriate driver. It is also a good idea to have any driver disks that came with your computer and/or peripheral devices handy.

Let us know how you make out.

Did not work. I went there and there was no problem. a couple of weeks prior to my problem I installed an " Adaptec AHA-29/40 ultra wide SCSI card and a HP 4020i CD writer that was given to me ( I could not get it to work ). I did remove the SCSI devises in Device manager. Any other thoughts friends??
Thanks

Hi Peter1...try the MS recommended fix:

Boot to Safe Mode ( as if you have another choice! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif ).

Either - open config.sys and autoexec.bat and look for any references to smartdrv.exe. Type rem and a space at the beginning of any line referencing smartdrv.exe.

Or - rename smartdrv.exe. Reboot.

Try this and let us know.

*Edit*...oops, forgot to include the link.

Hey:
Ok, I admit it, I'm no Bill Gates ( but I can hold my own). I do not know how to access those files through windows. I can in Dos, and did, but found nothing that said smartdrv.exe. I checked both config.sys and autoexec.bat. I am thinking of ( but would perfer not to reinstall windows ) If you think this is my best bet, What is the best way to do it
Thanks taking your time with me.

Peter, in Safe mode, start > Run > Sysedit.

NB the autoexec.bat file you see in DOS may not be the same as the ones Windows sees if "Pure DOS" has ever been installed.

In Systen.ini 5 windows opened and then "System configuration error C:\windows\win.ini cannot open this file."
First window is "Autoexec.bat" there is no reference to smartdrv.exe.
Next window "Config.sys only says files=60
next 3 windows sys.ini,protocal.ini,msmail.ini no ref to smartdrv.exe.
And if things are not grim enough, I just cracked my last beer.

Very unusual. Check what attributes win.ini has by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. There should just be a check in the Archive box.

Also, are you saying that the only line in config.sys is files=60?

I work the US night shift in Hong Kong, and smurfy lives in the twilight zone http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif so there'll always be someone around.

Clarification of Ed's intructions here:
Look in C:\Windows for file WIN.INI
Right-Click and select properties.
Should be no ticks in Read Only or Hidden
Should have a tick in Archive.

Remember here that Windows 95 does not actually REQUIRE autoexec.bat or config.sys to run so the files=60 may not be a huge drama.
The fact that sysedit cannot open WIN.INI will point to the root of the problem.
