Welcome to CTH
Was there not a warranty on the computer from z store? TAKE IT BACK.. If that is not an option. Then before installing ME again, try this: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore Select “Restore my computer to earlier time” and click next This step to choose a restore point in the process presents the user with a calendar interface to help select the desired restore point. Days in which restore points were created are presented in bold. Select Date and hit next. Click “OK” and then hit “NEXT” The progress indicator completes and the computer is restarted with the new configuration. There is no cancel button to interrupt the process at this stage. If the computer loses power or is restarted, the restore will be reverted when Windows starts next – that is, the system will be set back to the state from just before the restore attempt was made.

Sorry no one has been around to help. Glad the restore went OK. Since your sound is working then it must be just a configuration problem
START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL Double click on Double-click the Sounds and Multimedia icon In the Sounds and Multimedia Properties dialog box, select the appropriate tab:

What on-line gaming service are you using?
Somethings to check: Click with the right mouse button on the speaker icon in the system tray and a pop-up menu will appear. Click Open Volume Controls to open the Volume Control window. If any Mute options are checked, uncheck them. Check the volume levels. Might be another program running on your system trying to use the sound card. Last but no least, make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card. Might or might no be a factor here.

When you system starts up you may have programs installed that automatically load. There are icons in the system tray (the area next to the clock on the taskbar) when the software is enabled. Locate the software icons in the system tray.
Click the software icon with the right mouse button and a pop-up menu should appear. In the pop-up menu, there should be an option to turn off this software. Examples of options include Disable, Exit, Close, and Quit. Do you know what programs auto load? You can also try just pressing the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys all at once to open the Windows Security window. Click the Task Manager button. On the Applications tab, you will see a list of programs that are currently running on your system. To turn off a program, click on it once to highlight it, and then click End Task. You may receive another message stating the system is busy. When this message appears, click End Task again. *Only do this for programs that you don't need running. Check here for reinstalling Windows, though I would wait and see if you can get this fixed before doing anything drastic.

Yes, you will have to back up what you want to keep before reinstalling Windows again. Unless you reinstall it over itself, though that might cause more problems than you already have.

I hope you dont mind me popping in here
Hello Diane.. please dont worry. Forum posting takes a while to get used to. We were all newcomers once.. CTH has some very good and experienced mods and members who can sort any problem out.( usually) There are a few female members Myself Purest Light Annmarie who is a moderator. Photolady( who knows a thing or two in the hardware department) and many more i cant list here Please dont be put off by making a mistake.. we have all been there and done that The most important point is not to be afraid of asking questuions. If you get a reply that is a bit too technical just say so... Welcome again its nice to meet you |
