I'm dying here... please help... I'm brand new to this...
I had mepis and xp-pro dual booting on my lappy... my xp came with the pc... no discs... just recovery discs that are in good shape. Anyway I erased mepis... reformatted... and now when Iturn on I get the Grub error 15 message... and can onlyget a linux disc to boot off the cd/dvd drive... my recovery disc goes back to the message and so do any other discs... I have to drop Lunux for now... I need badly my pc.... not the files... they're long gone... I just want to have windows running... that's it. I have a new Knoppix live cd... but as a newbie... when I have it loaded, I don't know how to get to a line... or prompt or where ever it is I can enter commands... though I think with a dos prompt I could fdisc... or fixboot or a few others... Please tell me how to get to a command line or to a dos command line...and ideas on what to enter I'm dying here.... again I don't need to save files.... and I just want to completely drop linux for now... Thanks, Stocky |

Under knoppix, you won't be able to run 'fixboot' or 'fixmbr' as these are dos commands, not linux commands.
The way I see it, you have a few options. One would be getting a Windows boot floppy, which you should be able to restore the Windows bootloader from (by running 'fixboot' / 'fixmbr'). If this is not possible with your machine in its present shape, you could try installing lilo from the Knoppix live cd. Lilo is a linux bootloader, similar to grub, but it does not need an active partition to read the configuration to be used, so you would be able to install it and boot Windows as a temporary fix. If that doesn't pan out, you could try using either the GAG or Smart Boot Manager boot floppy to boot into Windows. Decide on one of these options, and we can help you fix your problem.

No windoze mgr ?
You're saying I can't get to windows manager through Knoppix ???
and there's no way to recover through knoppix? I have no boot disc... I heard knoppix would hold an answer... wrongly I guess. And there's no way to get rid of Grub... which is the big problem here... stopping me from using my recovery disc. I guess there's no way on earth to get rid of Grub??? And from what you're saying, a person can't get into window manager thru knoppix as well? Please, Any other ideas would be a godsend... Thanks, Stocky |

If you know the manufacturer of your hard drive,
you can go to their web site and download the tools to write all zeros to the drive. This will get rid of grub. I have had this happen a couple of times. |

"Got it!"
Someone suggested I get into Knoppix, find a command line... and enter SUDO TESTDISK, then on the list of choices... 3rd or 4th, choose WRITE MBR.
and select YES as to are you sure? It got me up and running! Thanks to all of you for your time and consideration. I don't know if GRUB was erased, but it's no longer in the picture. Got a feeling it's still sitting protected in my unused partition... something's in there, but for those who can't get by the Grub error message, this got me back to where I needed to be. GL to all, Regards, Stocky
