I woke up this morning, flicked on the computer, and none of my shortcuts seem to do anything anymore. Even newly created shortcuts are inoperative. Plus, Internet Explorer has quit completely. Everything was working fine the last time the computer was on (yesterday).

I've already run the latest Norton and came up clean. The comp's about two years old, and has quite a bit of stuff piling up on it. Anyone have any idea what my problem might be?

Try this:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Microsoft Internet Explorer>Remove

This will pop up an options Window - Choose Repair.

Thanks. That was the next thing I tried actually, and it fixed IE, more or less. But shortcuts are still non-functional, and I've discovered that mpegs don't work. As well, the game Alpha Centuri is now giving me an error when it tries to load (I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything, even all the programs I've run in the last week).

It really seems like some mysterious file at the heart of everything has been corrupted, but I haven't a clue where or how to start looking....

With nothing to lose, you can try TweakUI, it has a Repair option for various features that may help you out.

Great. Not only did TweakUI fix my shortcuts association problem, it's a nice little program. I feel like I'm stitching this machine together with software ducktape, but there is only one mystery left unsolved. This game I've reinstalled twice is giving me the following error. Any ideas?
