Distorted display

Thanks for taking a look. System specs first, then game specs, next the situation, and finally my questions.

Gateway PC, model 500 C
Windows XP Home
Pentium 4 1.5 MHz
1280 MB RAM (upgraded from 256)
290 GB Hard Drive (upgraded from 40)
Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 PCI (not PCI Express) 128 MB (upgraded from GEFORCE2 MX400 AGP4X 64MB TV OUT LOW)
CD ROM drive: HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B
Direct X 9.0c installed
Current display mode: 1024 x 768, 32 bit

Dawn of War / Winter Assault minimum specs:
Windows 98SE/2000/XP/ME
Direct X 9.0c
1.8 GHz Intel Pentium III or equivalent AMD Athalon XP processor
4.5 GB free hard drive space
4x CD-ROM drive
32 MB DirectX 9.0c compatible AGP video card with Hardware Transform and Lighting
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card, 16 bit sound
Keyboard mouse

Shattered Union minimum specs:
128 MB RAM
Pentium III 800 (or equivalent AMD)
Windows Operating System
128 MB video card supporting Vertex and Pixel Shading of 1.4 or higher
DirectX 9.0b

I purchased a new computer game, "Dawn of War / Winter Assault" that appeared to suit my system specs.

I did not notice the requirement that the video card be "AGP". Mine is "PCI".
I also apparently have not been realizing that my Pentium chip is VERY weak, rated in MEGA hertz, rather than GIGA hertz.
I attempted to run the game anyway.

During installation, Dawn of War had settings to test the display, and to adjust the screen resolution and refresh rate. I tried various settings. Almost all settings caused the game to display much too large on the screen, with all but the left third cut off. I did finally find a resolution that created a fairly tiny superimposed window over my desktop, which did display the game in proper proportions.....but much too small to be practical for play.

I uninstalled Dawn of War, and then reinstalled a game which has played just fine in the past, "Shattered Union". Suddenly, this game is ALSO displaying weird---- too enlarged on the screen!

Next, I put in a game that has been on the computer during and after the process with Dawn of War---- "Alpha Centauri". This game played and displayed normally sized on the screen with no problems.

All other things are displaying normally---- desktop, websites, Windows Media Player files.

1.What happened?

2. How can I get Shattered Union, et. al. displaying normally again?

3. Is my Pentium FOUR 1.5 MHz inferior to a Pentium THREE 1.8 Gigahertz?

1st would be to uninstall the NVIDIA Display Driver and reinstall drivers.

Get the latest drivers from here.
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

read the Driver Installation Hints http://www.nvidia.com/object/driver_...ion_hints.html

reboot and try you Shattered Union game

Thanks. Right after posting, I did uninstall the video card drivers, and reinstalled. It made no difference at all.

When I start up Shattered Union, the desktop suddenly blinks black, then comes back hugely inflated. It then goes to the enlarged Shattered Union.
However, I tried a trick. When the enlarged desktop comes up, I right-click on it, select properties, and re-set the screen resolution to 1024 x 768. The desktop then blinks to that size, goes black, then Shattered Union runs in the right size.

I've uninstalled Dawn of War, so I don't know yet if this trick will work with that game.

Is my Pentium 4 at 1.5 MegaHertz inferior to, or superior to, a Pentium THREE at 1.8 GIGAhertz?

Can my PCI card ever hope to run an AGP game?
