I can not connect any messenger with Mepis 6.0

I am totally new to Linux, I tried the live CD, it works fine, I have now installed it onto a hard disk and am dual booting with XP windows as the main booter. Both are on separate drives. The problem that I am facing is I can not get any messengers to work in Mepis. The messengers (yahoo,MSN, ICQ) all work fine on windows but none work in Mepis. Kopete, which is preinstalled, allowed me to create my account and when i log into it it lists my contacts but when i try to connect to chat with them it shows all of them as offline. to check that, i rebooted to my xp hdrive and theres no problem chatting with them in it.How can i get it to work in any of the chatrooms?
thanks,Jim

Make sure your status isnt set to make you invisible. Make sure it is set to online or available, Im not real sure what kopete calls it.

You may also want to look into gaim. It handles msn, yahoo, and icq as well. If it isnt installed by default you can install it with synaptic or in konsole with apt-get install gaim.

HTH,
Joe

Hi again. thanks for yuor answer to my 1st question. I went into synaptic and downloaded kopete and set it up then tried to get onto the chat line using it and it still wont connect. all of the people who are presently online in the chat rooms are shown but all of them are also shown as "offline". this same thing has happened when i tried any of the other chat rooms.
any idea how i can get connected to them "online"??
Thanks,Jim

When Kopete starts up you should click on file, scroll down to "set status" then click "online" thats it.You can also click on the picture or icon of the face to acheive the same thing.
