Grace Hopper wrote the first compiler, A-O,in 1949.
If the word "Operating system" means software then the first didn't come until more than a decade or so later.

The Incas used rope and pulley's as a sort of calculator and in doing so invented the first mechanical computer.

This is a pruned version of a thread that was hijacked by myself and others. I thought the least I could do was present the question along with the replies that were relevant to the question, but did not belong to the long running thread.

If anyone is a glutton for punishment and wishes to see the thread in its entirety look Here (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136544).
